WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Baseball bolstered its NCAA Tournament resume with a ship-shape 3-0 win over No. 17 Michigan on Thursday at Alexander Field.
The Boilermakers (32-18, 15-6 B1G) and the Wolverines (32-17, 15-6) are tied for second place in the Big Ten Conference standings - two games behind front-running Minnesota - and continue their regular-season-ending three-game series Friday at 7 p.m. ET before concluding it Saturday at 1 p.m. All Purdue faculty and staff may purchase tickets to both games for just $2. Both games will be televised by BTN.
Senior right-hander Tanner Andrews pitched 7.1 innings before classmate lefty Ross Learnard put a ribbon on the shutout for his school season-record-tying 13th save. Purdue, which has won 11 consecutive home games, joined Stanford as the only teams to whitewash Michigan this season.
Friday is Salute to Service Night. Tickets for active and retired service workers are only $1.
Purdue will honor its seven seniors prior to Saturday's game. The group consists of Andrews, Learnard, first baseman Evan Kennedy, pitcher Mike Kornacker, outfielder Alec Olund, shortstop Harry Shipley and pitcher Cameron Williams. In addition, the first 500 fans will receive the third set of Boilermaker baseball cards.
The Big Ten Tournament begins May 23 in Omaha, Nebraska.
8 Big Ten Titles for Track & Field
The outdoor track & field teams won eight titles at the Big Ten Championships, which concluded May 13 in Bloomington, Indiana.
Leading the way was senior Devynne Charlton, who won the 100-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles and was part of the 4x100-meter relay team. All three of her wins were repeat victories from last year's meet. She was the top overall point-scorer with 24.5 and earned Women's Track Athlete of the Championships honors for the second straight year.
Other individual winners were senior Symone Black (400-meter hurdles), junior Janae' Moffitt (high jump), senior Brionna Thomas (400-meter dash) and sophomore Waseem Williams (100-meter dash).
Joining Charlton on the 4x100-meter team were sophomore Sekayi Bracey, senior Savannah Roberson and junior Yakira Love. Sophomore Chloe Abbott, Thomas, Black and senior Jahneya Mitchell won the 4x400-meter relay.
The women's team finished second, merely two points behind Minnesota. The men's team wound up in 10th place.
Next up for the Boilermakers is the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, which will take place May 24 to 26 in Tampa. Purdue has 31 entries (22 women and nine men). To read more, click here.
Purdue Captures Governor's Cup
Purdue captured the Governor's Cup for the fourth time in five years.
The title is the Boilermakers' first under second-year athletics director Mike Bobinski.
Purdue won by a 10.5-9.5 margin with its women's outdoor track & field team finishing higher than Indiana at the Big Ten Championships (second vs. fourth), which took place ironically in Bloomington.
Fall sports proved the difference as the Boilermakers opened a 3.5-1.5 lead, sweeping volleyball for the fifth straight year and picking up a key victory in football (their first since 2012). Indiana recorded a 4-3 advantage in winter sports, and the schools split eight spring sports points.
Purdue won the 2013-14 Governor's Cup by a 12-8 margin for its first title since 2006-07, made it back-to-back titles with a 10-9 decision in 2014-15 and made it three in a row with a 12.5-7.5 verdict in 2015-16. The Boilermakers' 12.5 points are tied for the most ever by either school (also Indiana in 2008-09).
