Brees Academic Performance Center Expansion (April 2019)
MAKING THE GRADE
Purdue Athletics supports the educational mission of the university in its pursuit of academic achievement and graduation.
The mission is “Developing Champions / Developing Scholars / Developing Citizens.” We place value in the intercollegiate athletics experience, believing that students learn self-discipline, build self-confidence and develop competitive skills. Our student-athletes learn practical life skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship, winning and losing, and hard work.
Through the spring 2020 semester, the football program boasted a composite grade-point average of 3.05 – a team record. Last season saw 35 football players earn Academic All-Big Ten honors, breaking last year’s school record of 29.
ACADEMIC SUCCESS
Purdue student-athletes have maintained better than a 3.0 cumulative GPA for 23 consecutive semesters, and they regularly perform equal to or better than the general student body. Following the spring 2020 semester, the cumulative GPA for all current Purdue student-athletes was 3.22 – a department record. The four-year graduation success rate stands at 86 percent. More impressive is the fact that 90 percent of those student-athletes who complete their eligibility at Purdue receive a diploma. Student-athletes who graduated in May of 2019 realized a 93 percent placement rate.
“I couldn’t be more proud of our young people and the way they are able to manage the challenging academics, the strong academics here at Purdue,” athletics director Mike Bobinski says. “Clearly, it’s to their great credit that they get it done. We’ve got a great team of folks in the academic support area that help them, our faculty are great, and ultimately it’s up to our coaches to identify young people to bring to Purdue that have the capability and the desire. Our academic accomplishment is very strong and ultimately the one we are most-proud of and the one that has the most lasting impact of anything we do.”
BREES ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE CENTER
In March of 2019, the facilities in the Brees Academic Performance Center expanded nearly seven-fold with the addition of 10,500 square feet of study rooms, tutoring space, a study hall and flexible classrooms. At the same time, the existing Brees Center space received significant upgrades, and the entire facility boasts state-of-the-art technology in an environment conducive to modern-day learning.
TUTORIAL PROGRAM
Tutorial Services are offered to all student-athletes free of charge. The tutorial staff consists of undergraduate and graduate students, instructors from campus, professionals from the community and retired Purdue faculty. The objective is to cover every academic discipline to ensure student-athletes have assistance in all coursework.
ACADEMIC MENTOR PROGRAM
The Academic Mentor Program was developed to provide student-athletes with even greater support in meeting their individual academic needs. Every student-athlete is different, and the staff wants to ensure that all are receiving the necessary academic resources to succeed at Purdue. Mentors are individually selected and are educated to ensure our mission of academic integrity.
STUDENT-ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT
The Purdue Athletics student-athlete development program is committed to the personal and professional growth of our student-athletes by developing champions, scholars and citizens. We provide a holistic program that encourages student-athletes to improve themselves academically, athletically and personally. The program affords our student-athletes the opportunity to discover and develop their strengths, values and goals. We focus on the well-being of the whole person, not just the student or the athlete. The program enhances the student-athlete experience in the areas of career development, community service, leadership and personal development.
