Student-athletes are eligible to receive free individual counseling from one of two sport psychologists. Counseling provides a nonjudgmental perspective in an accepting environment that can help you find direction, as well as possible courses of action in order to improve your situation. Services are confidential, which means that unless you give permission we cannot tell anyone that we are working with you or what we talk about in sessions. Commonly addressed topics include: coping with life stressors, time management, coping with injury, career transitions, eating disorders, substance abuse, relationship stress, depression and anxiety.

Signs that may warrant services include: drop in grades, lack of motivation, missing class/practice, difficulty focusing, worrying or spending more time alone.

If you feel as though you can benefit from any of the services that we offer, Boilermaker student-athletes can contact our staff via email to schedule an appointment. Please provide the days and times that work for your schedule in your email, and refrain from including any confidential information such as medical history. Our offices are located on the event level of Mackey Arena in the sports medicine center. If your crisis or concern is life-threatening and should not wait for an appointment, please dial 911 and ask to speak to the Purdue Police CIT Officer.

Sport Psychology

  • Sport psychology uses psychological principles to help athletes, teams and others to improve their mental approach and skills to reach their optimum performance capabilities.
  • Sport psychology services can take many forms and may include briefly talking after a practice or a longer session in an office setting. Services typically are more skill-based and solution-focused as compared to a mental health counseling session.
  • Commonly addressed topics include: confidence, communication, team cohesion, goal setting, performance slumps, managing emotion, self-talk, burnout, leadership and getting "into the zone."
