April 30 Introduction to the Series...
For Purdue baseball’s radio announcers, it has been a regular topic of conversation on road trips over the years – “who’s in your all-time Purdue lineup?” More specifically, “who would you select as the top Boilermakers from your years covering the team?”
This spring, unfortunately, provided an opportunity to expand the conversation into a real endeavor. The decision was made to focus on the first 20 years of this century. Throughout the month of May, PurdueSports.com is offering fans an opportunity to participate in the voting as we “Build A Ballclub” of the Boilermakers’ top performers since 2000.
Yearly positional breakdowns were analyzed and games started at specific positions compiled, producing a better sense of which candidates should be nominated at which positions. We’re aiming to have fans select 30 Boilermakers for this ballclub. Using Twitter and Google, there will be a chance to vote on a different position/category every day through May 30. Each daily vote will have four players to choose from.
Multiple longtime members of the gameday and support staff were consulted after compiling the list of potential candidates for each position/category. The Build A Ballclub series is sponsored by Franciscan Health.
Criteria for inclusion in the voting for this series…
• A Boilermaker had to be at least a 2-year letter-winner.
• A Boilermaker had to play at least 2 seasons in the 2000s (2000-01) to be eligible for consideration. For players who were upperclassmen from 2000 to 2001, their numbers from 1998 to 1999 are also included in their career stats.
More Guidelines…
• Once a player is voted onto the team, he will not be candidate again in a subsequent vote that he could have been considered for.
• Players can be candidates for multiple votes. This mostly applies to pitchers, utility players and the at-large categories. However, players are only eligible for one of the utility categories.
• Voting for each position/category will last for 24 hours on Twitter and approximately the same length of time on Google. Totals will be calculated and positional winners will be listed on this page throughout the month.
• Career statistics, a breakdown of career starts by position (excluding pitchers), and notables like All-Big Ten honors will be listed under each candidate's name.
• When organizing right-handed starting pitchers into groups of four for the daily voting, an effort was made to limit the number of multi-year teammates in the same group.
• The utility pitcher category is defined as Boilermakers that made a minimum 30% and a maximum 70% of their appearances as a starter.
• The utility outfielder category is defined as Boilermakers that made at least 10 career starts at each of the three outfield positions.
Changes from 2000 to 2020 worth consideration…
• The current BBCOR standard on all bats was adopted by the NCAA prior to the start of the 2011 season. The BBCOR standard effectively requires non-wood bats (metal & composite) to produce batted ball speeds no greater than wood.
• Prior to the 2015 season, the NCAA made a change to the flat-seam ball also utilized by Major League Baseball. Due to a lower drag coefficient, a flat-seam ball travels farther in the air when well hit than its raised-seam counterpart.
• Through the end of the 2008 season, Big Ten play featured four-game weekend series. Saturday doubleheaders consisted of two seven-inning games. Eight conference weekends have remained a constant. However, from 2000 to 2008, Purdue’s schedule featured 32 Big Ten games and fewer non-conference midweek dates while 2009 to present has featured a 24-game league slate and more midweek non-conference dates.
• Purdue played its home games at Lambert Field from 1965 to 2012 and opened Alexander Field in March 2013.
-- Lambert Field Dimensions: 340 to LF, 375 to Power Alleys, 408 to CF, 340 to RF
-- Alexander Field Dimensions: 340 to LF, 368 to Power Alleys, 408 to CF, 330 to RF

Even though he lie motionless on the field for several minutes afterward, that play kept the tying run from scoring. He was back in the lineup for the Big Ten Tournament opener and enjoyed a big week in Omaha, highlighted by a walk-off single vs. Michigan. He led the nation in HBP in 2017. He truly was fearless." – Rob Blackman, Purdue Radio Announcer (2009-Present)

He was back in the lineup for the Big Ten Tournament opener and enjoyed a big week in Omaha, highlighted by a walk-off single vs. Michigan. He led the nation in HBP in 2017. • About the Winner: "Spencer Ingaldson was such an atypical catcher, but it was those characteristics that served him so well as a Boilermaker. It's not often you see a switch-hitting backstop who can set the table at the top of the order, like Ingaldson did back then when frequently batting either leadoff or second ahead of run-producers like Ryne White and Dan Black; he was a real weapon. And Doug Schreiber could count on him to be in the lineup everyday, because when he needed a day off from behind the plate, he had the ability to go into the outfield (or DH) and still be a strength." – Kyle Charters, Purdue Radio Announcer (2005-Present)
