WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Kathryn Ackerman demonstrated her versatility and excellence in all four strokes while eclipsing the women's program record in the 400 individual medley in both the prelims and finals, with the graduate transfer's performance highlighting Friday's action at the Purdue Invitational for Purdue Swimming & Diving.
Ackerman posted times of 4:11.34 and 4:10.61 while eclipsing Nika Karlina Petric's team record (4:12.75) that had stood since the 2016 Big Ten Championships. She ultimately lowered the benchmark by 2.14 seconds while winning the event. It marked the second day in a row a team record changed hands after Sophie McAfee set a new standard in 3-meter diving Thursday. Hannah Hill has also established a Purdue record in the 50 freestyle this season.
The Boilermakers won six events for the second day in a row, including a sweep of the three diving events. Maxwell Blume matched Ackerman's achievement while winning the prelims and A final of the 100 breaststroke. Adele Sands, Caitlin Hurley, Ackerman and Kate Mouser also teamed up for a decisive victory in the 800 freestyle relay in the final women's event of the night.
Jordan Rzepka was victorious in 3-meter diving by 57.6 points with a lifetime best score of 456.53, moving up to fifth place on the program's all-time leaderboard. Rzepka also won an event at the Purdue Invitational for the fourth consecutive year. The Purdue men produced the top five finishers in a springboard event for the second day in a row.
Daryn Wright and McAfee finished 1-2 in 1-meter diving, switching spots while duplicating their achievement from Thursday on 3-meter. They also teamed with Avery Worobel for a victory in team diving.
Keira Kask qualified for A finals in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, opting for a second swim in the 100 fly after moving up to eighth place in program history with her career-best time in the prelims. Sophia Capp finished top 12 in the prelims of the both the 100 breaststroke and 100 back, adding her named to the program's all-time leaderboard in the 100 breast while emerging as the Boilermakers' top finisher in the event.
Wyatt Blair did race twice in the finals session, winning the B finals of the 100 fly and 100 breast approximately 20 minutes apart.
Before teaming up with Ackerman for a 13-second victory in the 800 free relay, Mouser, Sands and Hurley also finished 2-3-4 in the 200 freestyle. The Purdue women accounted for five of the eight qualifiers for the A final, racking up 88 points in the event. Meanwhile, the Boilermakers' freshman quartet of Lara Phipps, Caroline Frazier, Sienna Nitke and Campbell Scofield teamed up for the second-fastest time of the night in the 800 free relay while winning heat 1.
The Purdue men closed out the night with an event victory and top-10 all-time mark in the 200 free relay, but it was nullified by a disqualification on the final exchange of the event. In their first event of the meet, seniors Brady Samuels (18.92) and Idris Muhammad (18.90) both posted sub-19 seconds 50 splits on the relay. Samuels went sub-19 on a relay for the second time this month and Muhammad accomplished the feat at the Purdue Invitational for the second year in a row.
The Purdue Invitational concludes Friday with swimming prelims at 10 a.m., the platform diving finals at 1 p.m. and the finals session at 5 p.m.
