COLUMBUS, Ohio – Purdue's Jordan Rzepka ripped his final two dives for a combined score of 180.8, rocketing up the leaderboard to claim bronze on 3-meter by .05 hundredths of a point Friday at the Big Ten Championships.
Rzepka won his third career medal at Big Tens thanks to big scores of 95.00 and 85.80 in the final two rounds of the championship final – both totals ranking as the best in their respective rounds among the eight-diver field. The combined total of 180.80 points allowed Rzepka to rocket up the leaderboard, winning a medal by .05 hundredths over the fourth-place finisher. The junior finished top four in both springboard events this week at Big Tens.
Brady Samuels was also a championship finalist Friday, finishing seventh in the 100 backstroke. It was his fifth career championship final at Big Tens.
Senior Coleman Modglin officially became a four-year scorer at Big Tens while qualifying for the B final of the 100 breaststroke. He posted a lifetime best mark of 52.97 in the prelims, becoming just the fourth Boilermaker to go sub-53 seconds in the event.
Charlie King won a swim-off in the 100 butterfly to qualify for the B final. After posting a lifetime best in the prelims, he bested the mark again in the swim-off, moving into fifth place in team history with a time of 46.53. King represented Purdue as the program's Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree when the league announced the selections from each school before the Friday finals session.
Dylan Burau (47.06, 6th in 100 back), Maxwell Blume (53.53, 10th in 100 breast), Connor McCarthy (1:36.66, 13th in 200 free), Raymond Whittaker (53.95, 14th in 100 breast) and the 200 free relay team (1:17.80, T-6th) all moved up the program's all-time leaderboards with lifetime bests Friday.
All three divers that competed on 3-meter scored for the Boilermakers, teaming up for 43 points. Max Miller was a consolation finalist and Holden Higbie also scored with a top-24 showing in the prelim. Classmate Pat Broderick (400 IM) also scored as a freshman Friday. Purdue has had four freshmen contribute team points in individual events this week.
The Big Ten Championships conclude Saturday with swimming prelims at 10 a.m., diving prelims at noon and the finals session at 5 p.m.
