WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A men's victory on the tower and a 1-2 finish in the women's 200 breaststroke, each occurring for the second Saturday in a row, highlighted Senior Day for Purdue swimming & diving as the Big Ten Triple Duals/Quad concluded.
In the head-to-head team scoring, the Purdue women emerged victorious vs. Northwestern and Iowa to finish the dual meet season with an 8-2 record (4-2 Big Ten). That's their top mark since compiling a 12-1 dual record in 2010-11. The Purdue men split with Minnesota and Northwestern, finishing the season with a 3-3-1 dual record (1-2 Big Ten). Next up for both teams is the Big Ten Championships – Feb. 21-24 at home for the women and Feb. 28-March 2 at Ohio State for the men.
Mahala Erlandson and Maggie Love teamed up for the 1-2 finish in the 200 breast. Masy Folcik won heat 1 while finishing fourth overall, giving the Boilermakers three of the top four finishers in the event. Folcik, Love and Erlandson also gave Purdue three of the top four in the 100 breast Friday. On this day, Erlandson and Folcik both won their heats in lane 1.
Erlandson's winning time of 2:13.04 was a lifetime best and NCAA provisional qualifying time (B Cut), moving the junior into sixth place in program history. It was also a team season best. Folcik posted a personal season-best mark (2:15.33) for the second day in a row as well.
Jordan Rzepka and Holden Higbie teamed up for a 1-2 finish in platform diving after Rzepka and Max Miller did likewise on 3-meter Friday. Rzepka surpassed the 450-point mark again with a winning list of 465.05. He now has eight victories this season.
Brady Samuels posted a pair of B Cuts while finishing as the runner-up in both the 100 freestyle (43.23) and 100 butterfly (46.26), getting out touched by a Minnesota swimmer in both events – by .06 hundredths in the free and 0.23 hundredths in the fly. His time in the 100 fly doubled as a team season best.
The Abbies – Abby Marcukaitis and Abbie Kehmeier – both posted a lifetime best in the 200 backstroke. Marcukaitis' team season-best time of 1:57.62 moved the sophomore into seventh place in team history. Kehmeier (1:58.66) improved on her 13th-fastest time in Purdue record book.
Sophie McAfee was the runner-up on the women's side of platform diving. After sweeping the springboard events Friday, she has finished top two in 15 of her last 16 NCAA events since Oct. 20.
The women's Big Ten Championships at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center begin on Wednesday, Feb. 21 with the opening night session at 5 p.m. The 200 medley relay, 800 free relay and an exhibition team diving event will be featured that night. Tickets are on sale now for the conference championships, which Purdue hosting on the women's side for the first time since 2017.
