WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A pair of the longest-standing benchmarks in the team record books fell Friday as the Purdue swimming & diving teams opened the two-day Big Ten Triple Duals/Quad with six event victories.
Maggie Love eclipsed the program record in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:58.68, besting Emily Fogle's mark (1:58.94) that had stood since the 2012 Big Ten Championships. It was the women's longest-standing active record on the board entering the night.
Earlier in the night, Pat Broderick went 9:08.40 in the 1000 freestyle to eclipse a team freshman record that had stood since the 2010 Big Ten Championships. He moved into fourth place in program history in the process. Vinny Donnelly established the team's freshman records in the 1000 (9:11.93) and 1650 free (15:14.40) on the same mile 14 years ago. Entering the night, only David Boudia's springboard diving marks from 2009 had stood longer among the program's freshman records.
Brady Samuels swept the 50 and 200 free, giving the junior a team-high 12 individual event victories this season. He won the 200 free at the Big Ten Triple Duals for the second year in a row and an individual event at the meet for the third straight year. Samuels also teamed with Andrew Witty, Charlie King and Idris Muhammad to make the Boilermakers a winner in the 200 medley relay to open the meet. Individually, Samuels and Muhammad finished 1-2 in the 50 free.
Sophie McAfee swept the springboard diving events for the fourth time in the Boilermakers' last five NCAA meets dating back to November. With nine event victories this season, she now shares the team lead with Caitlin Hurley and Love. McAfee and Jenna Sonnenberg teamed up for a 1-2 finish on 1-meter.
The Purdue men had three of the top four finishers in both springboard events. Max Miller won on 3-meter with a personal season-best list score (394.15) for his fifth victory of the season and first since the Purdue Invitational in November. Jordan Rzpeka was the runner-up in both events, giving the Boilermakers another 1-2 finish on 3-meter.
Reagan Mattice (9:58.28, 13th in 1000 free), Mahala Erlandson (1:01.98, 13th in 100 breast) and King (1:45.29, 5th in 200 fly) joined Broderick as Boilermakers to move up the program's all-time leaderboards with their personal-best times Friday.
Along with Love's record, team season bests came from Kate Beavon (1:47.89 in 200 free), Masy Folcik (1:01.14 in 100 breast), Samuels (1:35.90 in 200 free), Broderick (1000 free), King (200 fly), Mattice (1000 free), the women's 200 medley and 800 free relay teams, and the men's 800 free relay team. The times for Folcik, King, Love and Samuels were all NCAA provisional qualifying times (B Cuts).
Action concludes Saturday with nine more events beginning at 11 a.m. Purdue's Senior Day Ceremony is slated for 10:30 a.m. Both the ceremony and meet will be streamed live on B1G+.
