ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Nick Sherman broke one of his own team records for the second day in a row and was among the trio of Boilermakers to finish top five in a championship final for Purdue men's swimming & diving Friday at the Big Ten Championships.
Sherman qualified for the A final of the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:33.56, eclipsing the benchmark (1:33.81) he had set on leadoff leg of the 800 free relay at Big Tens in 2021. He went on to finish fifth overall for his second top-five showing of the meet. The Purdue graduate also doubled up a record-breaking swim & top-five showing Thursday while winning silver in the 200 IM.
Brady Samuels successfully executed his event double, accounting for 42 team points while scoring in the A final of the 100 backstroke and B final of the 100 butterfly. His time of 45.86 while placing fourth in the 100 back improved upon his second-fastest mark in team history.
Jordan Rzepka was a championship finalist in a springboard diving event for the second day in a row. He ripped big dives in the first and final rounds, and the scores of 79 and 89 helped him finish fifth. The sophomore is now 5-for-5 in career top-10 showings at Big Tens. He finished with a season-best list score of 399.60 in the final.
Coleman Modglin led the way as Purdue had three qualifiers for the B final of the 100 breaststroke. Modglin moved up to fourth place in team history with a career-best time of 53.08. Andrew Alders and Andrew Witty also scored in the B final as the Boilermakers racked up 37 points in the event.
On the leadoff leg of the 200 free relay, Sherman posted a split of 19.47 to move into fourth place in team history in the 50 free. It was also a Purdue season best in the 50. Idris Muhammad and Samuels had strong 19.2 splits on their legs. Senior Liam Walker rounded out the Boilermakers' quartet, with their time of 1:17.39 being just .04 hundredths off the third-best mark (1:17.35) in team history posted in the event at the Purdue Invitational in November.
Individually, Muhammad scored in the B final of the 100 back while teaming with Samuels and Andrew Swenson to account for 44 points in the event. Muhammad's prelim time of 47.07 was just off his mark (46.98) on the leadoff leg of the 400 medley relay Thursday that moved the sophomore into fifth place in team history. Swenson had a career-best time of 48.05 in the prelims to earn his first second swim at Big Tens.
