EVANSTON, Ill. – Brady Samuels punctuated his successful weekend with two pool records in the final event of the two-day Big Ten Triple Duals, helping propel Purdue men's swimming & diving to a comeback win vs. host Northwestern.
Saturday's memorable day for the Boilermaker men also featured a sweep of the freestyle relays and a 1-2 finish in 3-meter diving. Purdue overcome a five-point deficit entering the day to best NU by 11 points in the team scoring.
The Boilermakers won seven events over the two days of competition. Along with Samuels' victories in the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle and men's relay winners, Sam Bennett (3-meter diving), Jenna Sonnenberg (3-meter diving) and Keelan Hart (100 free) were also victorious.
The Purdue women cruised to a one-side win vs. Iowa in the head-to-head team scoring.
Samuels' leadoff split of 43.01 on the 400 free relay was a pool record at NU's Norris Aquatics Center and propelled the Boilermakers to another pool record while winning the event in 2:53.10. Samuels and Hart teamed with Nick Sherman and Idris Muhammad for both freestyle relay wins Saturday. Muhammad (19.29 on third leg of 200) and Sherman (42.89 on second leg of 400) accounted for the top splits of the victories.
For the women, Kate Beavon's trio of season-best times – including team bests in the 500 and 1,000 free – and a pair of B cuts in the 200 fly highlighted the weekend. Beavon climbed into third place in program history with a time of 9:47.32 in the 1,000. Cecilie Wiuff moved into ninth place in the 200 fly with an NCAA provisional time (B Cut) of 1:59.22, a mark that doubles as a team season best. Lindsay Turner was just a hundredth of second behind (1:59.23) with a season best of her own.
Friday, Samuels won the 200 free with the second-fastest time (1:34.85) in program history. The sophomore now ranks top 2 in the team record book in four individual events – 100 and 200 free, 100 back, 100 fly. He has eight individual event wins this season, tops among the men's swimmers.
Bennett won by 39 points on 3-meter with his career-best list of 408.20, joining Purdue's all-time leaderboard at 14th place in the process.
Jordan Rzepka, Maggie Love, Coleman Modglin and Sherman joined Samuels as Boilermakers with multiple top-three finishes. Rzepka and Sherman both contributed to a 1-2 finish for Purdue.
