WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Nikola Aćin's sweep of the freestyle sprints and three different event winners in the dive well headlined Purdue swimming & diving's top showings in a triple dual vs. top-25 opponents Michigan and Missouri on Friday at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
Emily (Bretscher) Pfeiffer, Jordan Rzepka and Tyler Downs joined Aćin as event winners for the Boilermakers. Pfeiffer and Rzepka were victorious on 1-meter and Downs won on 3-meter by 61.92 points.
The Purdue swimmers posted a season-best time in all 14 events on both sides of the co-ed meet. The divers impressed with three of the top five finishers in both men's events and two of the top four in each of the women's. Freshmen Sophie McAfee, Downs and Rzepka were part of both groups.
Aćin not only swept the freestyle sprints with a pair (19.53, 43.34) of NCAA provisional qualifying times (B Cuts), but he also helped provide the fireworks that led to the exciting final moments of the meet. The Olympian roared through his anchor leg of the 400 free relay, with his split of 42.30 – easily the best in the event – allowing the Boilermakers to leapfrog Michigan for runner-up honors. Missouri (2:53.23), Purdue (2:53.59) and Michigan (2:53.73) all finished with a half-second of each other as the Tigers hung on for the victory.
Aćin teamed with Nick Sherman, Brady Samuels and Idris Muhammad for the fourth-fastest time (2:53.59) in program history. It's also good for fourth nationally this season.
Individually, Aćin and Samuels joined sophomore breaststrokers Masy Folcik and Coleman Modglin as Boilermakers to post a pair of B Cuts on Friday. Folcik was the runner-up in both of her races, moving into fifth place (1:00.87) in the 100 and sixth place (2:13.45) in the 200 in program history. Samuels moved into sixth place in Purdue history in the 100 butterfly (47.07) and 13th in the 50 free (19.87). Modglin's B Cut times were 54.09 in the 100 and 1:57.45 in the 200.
Abby Harter registered a pair of career bests in the backstroke events, moving into 11th place (54.83) in the 100 and 12th place (1:59.51) in the 200. Just as Harter broke two minutes in the 200 back, so to did freshman Madeline Greaves in the 200 fly (1:59.99), moving into 14th place in team history. Maggie Love moved up to 13th place in the 100 breast (1:02.36) and was also Purdue's top finisher with a team season-best (2:03.11) in the 200 individual medley.
Ryan Hrosik won heat 1 of the 50 free, teaming with Aćin to give the Boilermakers three of the four heat winners in the men's freestyle sprints.
The Boilermakers are idle from competition next week as they gear up for the three-day, six-session Purdue Invitational the weekend of Nov. 18 to 20.
