WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Three records for freshman Brady Samuels and 19 marks that went into the programs' record books headlined Friday's action for Purdue swimming & diving on the middle day of the Purdue Invitational.
Samuels eclipsed the program and freshman records in the 100 butterfly in both the prelims and finals. He also broke the Boilermakers' freshman benchmark while winning silver in the A final of the 100 backstroke. Samuels won the A final of the 100 fly in 45.66 and went 46.88 in the 100 back. As part of a breakout meet, Samuels has posted three NCAA provisional qualifying times (B Cuts) and finished top two in all three of his individual events this week.
Tyler Downs was victorious in 3-meter diving for a fourth consecutive meet, teaming up with Jordan Rzepka and Greg Duncan for a 1-2-3 finish. All three Boilermakers posted 400-point lists, with Downs (450.70) improving on his seventh-best score in team history and Rzepka (422.35) moving into ninth place.
Samuels led the way as the Purdue men racked up 74 points and won all four finals heats of the 100 fly. The Boilermakers had three of the top four and five of the top nine finishers. Liam Walker and Nick Sherman were 3-4 with career-best times and Michael Juengel won the B final with Purdue's second-best mark (47.28) of the season, moving into eighth place in the record book.
Emily (Bretscher) Pfeiffer medaled for the second night in a row, winning bronze on 1-meter after emerging victorious on 3-meter Thursday. She headlined the seven A finalists for the Purdue women. Madeline Greaves (5th in 400 IM), Jenna Sonnenberg (5th on 1-meter), Masy Folcik (7th in 100 breast), Maggie Love (8th in 100 breast), Elissa Haake (8th in 200 free) and Abby Harter (8th in 100 back) also competed among the top competitors in their events. Folcik, Love and Greaves all moved up the all-time leaderboards, including Folcik now ranking fourth in the 100 breast (1:00.60) as the sophomore sets her sights on breaking the one-minute mark. Maycey Vieta was a finalist on 1-meter as well before opting to scratch from the evening session.
Brett Riley was the first Boilermaker of the night to post a medalist finish, taking silver in the 400 individual medley for his second top-five showing of the meet in an IM event. Sherman's versatility was also on display Friday. The senior won his prelim heats of the 100 back and 100 fly. He scratched from his A final berth in the 100 back but capped the night with a B Cut on the opening leg of the 800 free relay, posting a Purdue season-best time of 1:35.15 in the 200.
Two weeks ago at the triple dual with Michigan and Missouri, Samuels broke Chris Etherington's freshman record in the 100 fly (47.50) that had stood since 2006. It had been the longest-standing freshman benchmark. Friday, Samuels eclipsed Andrew Langenfeld's 100 fly team record (46.15) and Kristian Komlenic's 100 back freshman mark (46.97). In the process, Samuels became the first Boilermaker to go sub-46 seconds in the 100 fly and just the fourth Boilermaker to go sub-47 seconds in the 100 back. Meanwhile, a Langenfeld record that had stood since the 2009 Big Ten Championships fell for the second night in a row.
The men's 200 medley relay team (1:25.23, 4th) and Coleman Modglin (53.28, 5th in 100 breast) moved into the top five in program history. The relay quartet was Juengel, Kevin O'Dare, Samuels and Nikola Aćin. As classmates, Aćin and Juengel have been constants in the medley relay success that has seen Purdue post a top-four time every year of their careers.
The three-day Purdue Invitational concludes Saturday with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
