WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue wrestling will send a pair of competitors to both the UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials and the U.S. Senior Freestyle World Team Trials Challenge Tournament spanning Friday to Sunday at the RCTC Regional Sports Center in Rochester, Minnesota. Parker Filius and Max Lyon take to the mat in junior freestyle action starting Friday at 11 a.m. ET, while Griffin Parriott and Jake Sueflohn begin their senior freestyle quest Saturday at 11 a.m.
In late April, Lyon had a fifth-place showing at 86 kg at the UWW Junior Freestyle National Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada. He closed out a 5-2 weekend with a 60-second 10-0 technical fall against Michigan State's Cameron Caffey.
Despite not wrestling in the UWW Junior Freestyle National Championships, Filius, as well as Lyon, had already secured eligibility in the UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials with their performances at the 2017 U.S. Marine Corps Junior Freestyle National Championships. Filius was a third-place finisher at 138 pounds and Lyon took home the 182-pound title.
Filius will wrestle at 65 kg in Rochester.
The winners of the UWW Junior National Championships earned an automatic berth to the best-of three wrestle-off against the challenge tournament champion. The 65 kg champion was Dominick Demas of Oklahoma RTC and Lou Deprez of Bearcat Wrestling Club won it all at 86 kg. Lyon met Deprez in the quarterfinals in Las Vegas, dropping a 4-4 match on criteria.
Top-seven performances by Sueflohn and Parriott at the Marine Corps U.S. Open Men's Freestyle National Championships, also held in Las Vegas in late April, qualified the pair for the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament. Sueflohn will compete at 74 kg, while Parriott will be in the 70 kg field.
The competition field for the U.S. Senior Freestyle World Team Trials Challenge Tournament is composed of wrestlers that have qualified based upon approved selection procedures.
Sueflohn secured his place in the Challenge Tournament by placing third at the U.S. Open, his best senior-level performance. The Boilermakers' volunteer assistant coach capped off his 5-1 weekend by taking out Quinton Godley of Wolfpack Wrestling Club 11-0 in 4:03.
With 74 kg being a weight class with a World medalist, U.S. Open 74 kg champion Isaiah Martinez directly advanced to the best-of-three championship series Sunday in Rochester. Click here for a list of entrants and a 74 kg preview.
Wrestling in his first senior-level tournament, Parriott used a 2-1 decision to defeat Josh Reyes of Orange Crush Wrestling Club to place seventh at the U.S. Open. Also among his five wins was a 10-0 (4:30) upset of fourth-seeded Chase Pami of Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club, who was a two-time All-American and 2010 NCAA runner-up at Cal Poly.
As a weight class with a World medalist, U.S. Open 70 kg champion Jason Chamberlain automatically moves to the best-of-three championship series Sunday in Rochester. Click here for a list of entrants and a 70 kg preview.
The Challenge Tournament winners at each weight class advances to one of the three Final X series events in June; 70 and 74 kg winners are assigned to the Final X in Lincoln, Nebraska, on June 9.
