WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- A trio from Purdue wrestling earned the right to vie for a spot on the U.S. Freestyle World Team by placing in the top seven at the Marine Corps U.S. Open Men's Freestyle National Championships and the UWW Junior Freestyle National Championships.
Volunteer assistant coach Jake Sueflohn (74 kg) and Griffin Parriott (70 kg) placed third and seventh, respectively, in the U.S. Open Men's Freestyle National Championships. On the UWW Junior Freestyle National Championships side, Max Lyon was fifth at 86 kg. Additionally, Kendall Coleman, an incoming freshman for Purdue, placed sixth at 65 kg. The two-day tournament opened from the South Point Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Friday and concluded action Saturday.
The four top-seven placewinners will next travel to Rochester, Minnesota, to compete in the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament and the UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials. The two tournaments will run simultaneously May 18 to 20 at the RCTC Regional Sports Center.
Sueflohn capped off his U.S. Open Men's Freestyle National Championships run by taking out Quinton Godley of Wolfpack Wrestling Club 11-0 in 4:03 in the 74 kg third-place bout. Two of his five wins during the tournament came over Wisconsin All-American and fourth seeded Evan Wick, Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, beating him 6-4 in the second round and 12-2 (2:21) in the consolation semifinals.
After winning the 70 kg title at last year's UWW Junior Freestyle National Championships, Parriott put together a 5-2 weekend to place seventh at 70 kg while wrestling in his first senior-level tournament. The redshirt freshman defeated Josh Reyes of Orange Crush Wrestling Club 2-1 to claim seventh place. After dropping a second round match to Hunter Stieber of Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, Parriott won three straight in wrestlebacks to get into the consolation quarterfinals. The highlight victory was a 10-0 (4:30) upset of fourth-seeded Chase Pami of Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club, who was a two-time All-American and 2010 NCAA runner-up at Cal Poly.
Lyon needed only 60 seconds to beat Michigan State's Cameron Caffey 10-0 in the 86 kg fifth-place match of the UWW Junior Freestyle National Championships. He opened with a pair of wins, beating Tyler Self of Western Colorado Wrestling Club 11-0 (1:53) and Nicholas Casperson of Legends of Gold 4-2. After a quarterfinal 4-4 loss on criteria to Lou Deprez of Bearcat Wrestling Club, Lyon wrestled his way into the consolation semifinals with two more wins. He finished the weekend with a record of 5-2.
Coleman went 5-3 on his way to a sixth-place showing at 65 kg. The South Holland, Illinois, product defeated five of the seven NCAA opponents he went up against. Two of those wins featured Big Ten Conference foes, Illinois RTC's Jacob Silzer 14-4 (3:00) and Northwestern's Yahya Thomas 8-6.
Shawn Streck finished one spot shy of qualifying for the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament, placing eighth at 125 kg in the U.S. Open Men's Freestyle National Championships. Streck avenged two folkstyle losses to Hofstra All-American Michael Hughes with a solid 8-3 decision in wrestlebacks.
Purdue wrestling assistant coach A.J. Schopp was also in action at the U.S. Open Men's Freestyle National Championships, going 2-2 at 61 kg. Purdue wrestlers that competed in the UWW Junior Freestyle National Championships included Bjorn Schroeder (61 kg), Alec White (65 kg), Jared Florell (86 kg) and Christian Brunner (92 kg).
All of the Boilermakers that competed, junior and senior level, wrestled under the Boilermaker RTC.
