WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Three Purdue student athletic trainers have been awarded Newell-Combs scholarships, director of sports medicine Denny Miller announced Thursday evening.
The honored trio is Brent Thomas, Lea Simmons and Jason Morgan. Each will graduate next month and receive a $1,000 scholarship to help defray tuition costs.
Thomas, from Fulton, Ind., is looking to enter the athletic training field at the clinic and/or second school areas.
Simmons, from Keller, Texas, is pursuing employment in the medical area.
Morgan, from Anderson, Ind., has been hired as an assistant athletic trainer with the Green Bay Packers.
The Newell-Combs Scholarships are given to juniors or seniors majoring in athletic training in the Department of Health and Kinesiology, within the School of Liberal Arts. The recipients are chosen from a pool of candidates and possess the ideals of scholarship, dedication, professionalism, sincerity, loyalty and citizenship. These are qualities that the late William E. "Pinky" Newell and Loyal W. "Doc" Combs felt were important for an athletic trainer.
The scholarship endowment is housed in the John Purdue Club, and donations to the endeavor can be made through the Club office.
