Three Purdue Athletes Named Academic All-District Five Trio of basketball players honored

A trio of Purdue Boilermakers have been selected as 2001 Verizon Academic All- District Five. Katie Douglas and Camille Cooper of the women's basketball team, as well as Carson Cunningham of the men's basketball team were chosen by a vote of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) members for their efforts in the classroom. They are all now candidates for the Verizon Academic All-American Team.

Douglas, a senior forward from Indianapolis, is carrying a 3.50 GPA in public relations. The Naismith Award finalist and national player of the year candidate was voted preseason Big Ten Player of the Year. Douglas has been a key component in leading the Boilermakers' run to the 2001 Big Ten Championship. Douglas is averaging 14.2 points and 4.4 rebounds and team bests in assists (3.5), steals (2.7), and minutes (30.6).

Cooper, a senior center from Georgetown, Ky., is carrying a 3.78 GPA in political science. "Coop" is an All-America candidate who was voted preseason third team All-American by Athlon Sports and Women's Basketball Journal. Cooper averages 14.0 points, also averages 6.2 rebounds and leads the conference with 1.8 blocks per game.

Cunningham, who is the lone senior on the men's basketball team and a point guard from Ogden Dunes, Ind., graduated in May 2000 with a 3.65 GPA in history and is now pursuing his master's degree. Cunningham is a 2000 Third Team Verizon Academic All-American. Cunningham is averaging 9.2 points this season and 10.1 points for his career.
