WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The John Purdue Club has awarded seniors Missy Bromley of the women's swim team, Katie Douglas of the women's basketball team and Warren "Ike" Moore of the football team the annual 2001 Red Mackey scholarships for continued education during the 2001-02 school year.
Bromley is a sprint freestyler from Indianapolis, Ind., and will complete her degree in secondary education with a concentration in teaching French in May of 2002. During her career, Bromley was consistently a leader for the Boilermakers, both in the pool and in the classroom, as she was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection in 1999, 2000 and 2001. In her senior season as a Boilermaker, Bromley helped lead the Purdue team to a seventh-place finish at Big Ten's, its highest finish in five years, while setting seven varsity records. She also was a member of the varsity record-setting 200 medley and 400 free relay teams. Both teams set those records at the Big Ten meet and recorded NCAA B-cut qualifying times. Bromley also swam the team's fastest 50-yard freestyle during the 2000-01 season.
Douglas, also from Indianapolis, Ind., was a guard-forward for the Boilermakers who made a great impact on both Purdue athletics and the community during her career. She is a communication major and will complete her degree in December of 2001. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Douglas was also named First Team Academic All-District V and All-American in 2001, First Team Academic All-District V and Second Team All-American in 2000 and Second Team Academic All-District V in 1999. During her career at Purdue, Douglas received numerous awards while leading her team to two Final Four appearances and two Big Ten Conference titles, three Big Ten Tournament titles and making her team the winningest class in Big Ten history. She is a two-time Naismith Award finalist and national player of the year candidate, as well as the third player in Big Ten history to be named a two-time Kodak All-American. Douglas has also been named to the All-Big Ten first team twice and the second team once. In April, Douglas was drafted as the 10th overall pick by the Orlando Miracle.
Moore, a defensive end from Memphis, Tenn., was an Academic All-Big Ten selection in 1997. He is a pharmacy major and will complete his degree in May of 2002. Moore recorded 17 tackles and appeared in all 12 games for the Boilermakers in the 2000-01 season. He helped lead the Boilermakers an 8-4 record, Big Ten championship and Rose Bowl appearance.
The Red Mackey Award, established in 1971, is named for former Purdue Athletic Director Guy "Red" Mackey, who served Purdue from 1942 to 1971. The inspiration for the award bearing his name stemmed from his leadership, loyalty, integrity and concern for others. The criteria for nomination includes a competitive spirit and a positive attitude, loyalty and self-discipline, hard work for the best interest of the team, and a willingness to help others. Each of Purdue's 18 intercollegiate athletics teams nominates student-athletes for the award and a committee of athletic department staff selects the three winners.
