St. John And Fellows Named September Athletes Of The Month Women's soccer player and men's cross country runner earn award

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Tari St. John (Brookfield, Wis., Milwaukee Pius XI) and Donnie Fellows (Mercer Island, Wash., Mercer Island) have been named Purdue's Athletes of the Month for their performances throughout September. The award is sponsored by WLFI-TV and Twin City Dodge-Chrysler.

Fellows, a senior on the men's cross country team, led the Boilermakers in their first three meets. Fellows twice was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week for men's cross country after a second-place finish in the Murray Keatinge Memorial (Sept. 9) and a first-place finish at the Indiana Intercollegiates (Sept. 15). He ended the month with a team-best 30th-place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational in St. Paul, Minn.

St. John, a junior midfielder on the women's soccer team, led the Old Gold and Black (8-3, 3-2 Big Ten) to its best start in the three-year history of the program. St. John has played in all 11 games for the Boilermakers, starting 10. She cored two goals in September, the first in a 7-1 road victory over Valparaiso. Her second tally came at Ohio State, where she deposited the game-winning goal that defeated the Buckeyes 1-0. St. John, who also recorded two assist last month, currently ranks third on her team in points with eight.

Other nominees for the award included Drew Brees (football), Ginger Lakos (women's swimming) and Julie Doud (volleyball).
