Season Notes
• Lydy blew up his stats and made a name for himself nationally at 174 pounds after wrestling at 165 last season ... compared to last season, Lydy has more than doubled his total wins (35-16), takedown total (85-38), increased his overall point total by 128, while scoring 1.5 more points per match ... increased his third period scoring by 73 points.
• His 35 wins were the most for a Purdue wrestler since Luke Manuel won 41 matches during the 2009-10 season and they earned him a spot on the season record wins list tied for 12th.
• One of three Boilermakers to win 30+ matches this season, a first for Purdue since 2009-10 ... one of four Boilermakers to finish with more takedowns since Cashé Quiroga’s 94 in 2013-14.
• Spent 13 weeks on InterMat’s rankings, ranging from Nos. 11-15 ... his time at No. 11 (2/6) marked the highest individual ranking of the season for a Purdue wrestler and the highest ranking since Chad Welch finished the 2015-16 season at No. 8 ... he finished the season ranked 14th.
• Had a pair of wins over top-10 wrestlers: No. 9 Ethan Ramos (9-7) and No. 6 Myles Amine of Michigan (6-4) ... Lydy was unranked when he beat Ramos, was 15th when he beat Amine ... the win over Amine stands as the highest ranked opponent a Purdue wrestler upended during the season ... Ramos held a 4-2 advantage over Lydy going into the final frame ... Lydy took Ramos down three times, including a blast with just seconds remaining, for a 9-7 decision at the Journeymen/My House Northeast Duals ... a pair of first period takedowns by Lydy quickly set the tone in his 6-4 dual win over Amine, an eventual All-American ... Lydy escaped twice in the third and held Amine off as time ticked away.
• Was clutch in overtime matches, winning 7-of-8 matches that were extended ... had two wins in SV1, four in TB1 and 1 in SV2.
• Went 3-2 as the No. 15-seed at the NCAA Championships ... a takedown in the first period held for Lehigh’s No. 4 Jordan Kutler to set Lydy back 4-1 in the blood round and denied him a spot on the podium ... began his NCAA run with a 6-2 win over Northwestern’s Johnny Sebastian ... eventual NCAA runner-up Mark Hall of Penn State sent Lydy into wrestlebacks, where takedowns in the first and third periods guided him to a 5-3 decision over Matt Finesilver of Duke ... he followed with his second upset of the season against North Carolina’s Ethan Ramos, knocking out the 10th-seeded Tar Heel 5-3 ... Lydy once again tallied takedowns in the bookend periods of the match for the victory.
• Qualified for his first NCAA Championships in dramatic fashion ... with just four seconds left, Lydy scored the winning takedown on No. 8 Ryan Christensen of Wisconsin to win 2-1 in the Big Ten Championships consolation quarterfinals ... placed fifth with a 3-2 win over No. 7 Joey Gunther of Iowa ... the fifth-place finish by Lydy the best at 174 since Luke Manuel was fifth in 2010.
• Avenged a dramatic loss to Sebastian of Northwestern, a pin that came at the final horn at the Michigan State Open, with some drama of his own, winning the dual matchup 2-1 (TB1) ... No. 11 Lydy and No. 19 Sebastian exchanged escapes in the second and third periods ... Sebastian took bottom first and Lydy rode for the full 30 seconds ... Lydy then had his turn on bottom and immediately escaped for the 2-1 advantage and ultimately the win.
• Wrestled above his No. 7-seed to place third at the Midlands Championships, matching Luke Manuel (2009) for the highest finish at the weight for the Boilermakers ... went 5-1 with his second win in three December meetings over C.J. Brucki of Central Michigan ... had his first of two wins this season over Indiana’s Devin Skatzka, taking a 4-2 match in sudden victory.
• Unseeded, Lydy placed eighth in a Cliff Keen Las Vegas Wrestling Invitational bracket that contained a tournament-high 14 nationally ranked wrestlers, including seven of the top 10 ... became the first Boilermaker 174-pounder to place since Luke Manuel was eighth in 2010 ... pinned No. 18 Will Schany of Virginia in 9:00 in his first match ... the pin was the first of his career ... also upended Brucki 7-5 in the blood round.
• Put up three major decisions and a pair of decisions to place fifth at the Navy Classic ... outscored his six opponents 55-22 ... started with back-to-back major decisions.
