Season Notes
• Won three straight wrestleback matches after being upset in the first round of the NCAA Championships ... prevailed in sudden victory, taking No. 27 Vincent Deprez of Binghamton down with nine seconds left in the 60-second extra session to win 3-1 .. in the second round it was a takedown with 38 seconds left that separated Lydy from No. 12 Matt Finesilver of Duke 5-4.
• Then for the fourth time in six weeks, Lydy lined up against Ohio State’s Ethan Smith, and for the fourth time, he defeated the Buckeye ... the second period was Lydy’s, starting with an escape and takedown at the 1:10 mark, giving him a 3-1 advantage ... Smith made it 3-2 with an escape in the third and he was called for stalling twice in the final frame, awarding a point to Lydy for a final score of 4-2.
• Just like at the Big Ten Championships, a few seconds of riding time were the determining factor in Nebraska’s Mikey Labriola getting his arm raised in a matchup with Lydy ... this time it was six seconds that allowed Labriola to claim victory, 3-3 in the second tiebreaker, and deny Lydy from earning All-America honors for a second year in a row.
• Lydy was on bottom in the first of the second set of 30-second tiebreakers with the match locked at 2-2 ... it took 12 seconds for Lydy to escape and he knew he would have to ride Labriola for at least 12 seconds in the next 30-second tiebreaker ... Lydy tried to throw a leg in, but Labriola built up and popped from Lydy’s grasp six seconds in ... in one of the few opportunities Lydy was able to break through Labriola’s defense, he got in high on Labriola’s left leg and tripped the Husker ... Lydy kept both feet in, but Labriola skirted out of the circle and into the splits to avoid Lydy coming around for the takedown.
• Secured second automatic NCAA berth with a 5-1 decision of sixth-seeded Ethan Smith of Ohio State in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Championships.
• Also beat the Buckeye, Smith, in the fifth-place match 5-3 ... went 3-2 at Big Tens ... began the tournament by cruising past No. 14-seed Braxton Cody of Northwestern with a 17-2 (4:16) technical fall, the first of his career.
• Lydy’s losses at Big Tens were suffered in the championship semifinals and consolation semifinals ... in the championship semis, he was edged 6-5 by No. 2 Myles Amine of Michigan ... Lydy had the first takedown, but it was Amine with the last takedown midway through the second period ... five seconds of riding time were the difference in a 3-3 (TB2) consolation semifinal battle with Nebraska’s fourth-seeded Mikey Labriola ... all of the points scored by both wrestlers were by escapes.
• Held opponents to a career-low 3.3 points, surrendering just 15 takedowns in 39 total matches ... gave up the riding time point just four times.
• Five of his 10 losses were by 1-2 points, with two matches decided on riding time in TB2.
• Has been listed in 32 consecutive 174-pound rankings, dating to Dec. 5, 2017.
• Tied for second on the team with 42 dual points scored.
• Began the season by winning the Princeton Open ... defeated Chase Gallik of Lehigh 9-4 in the title match to win his first collegiate tournament ... had a pair of major decisions at the tournament.
• Went 5-1 to place sixth at Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational ... secured a place on the podium by defeating sixth-seeded Brandon Womack of Cornell 7-5 in the second sudden victory ... the two were locked at 5-5 at the end of regulation ... both wrestlers successfully rode out their 30-second tiebreaker session to remain at 5-5 ... 19 seconds into the second tiebreaker, Lydy found his shot and scored the winning takedown.
• Lydy medically forfeited his last two CKLV matches—Lydy’s fifth-place opponent also medically forfeited, resulting in the tie for sixth.
• Has twice defeated Minnesota’s Devin Skatzka this season ... the first was a 6-4 decision in the CKLV consolation quarterfinals ... the score was mirrored in the Feb. 3 dual, but this time they needed sudden victory ... both wrestlers scored a takedown and a pair of escapes during regulation to be locked at 4-4 ... Lydy’s winning takedown came out of a flurry in front of the Purdue bench with 12 seconds remaining ... last season when Skatzka was on the Indiana roster, Lydy took a pair of decisions, 4-2 (SV1) and 8-5.
• Missed the NC State (12/29) and Missouri (12/30) duals to injury ... it was just the first and second duals Lydy has not started since the 2016-17 season ... in three seasons he has started 47 of 49 possible duals.
• Returned to the lineup against Maryland (1/11) with a commanding 14-3 major decision over Josh Ugalde.
• Lydy took care of Michigan State’s Drew Hughes six seconds into sudden victory to win 4-2 ... Hughes matched Lydy’s first period takedown with an escape late in the opening stanza and riding time accumulated by taking top in the third ... it was Lydy’s third overtime victory of the season.

• His 35 wins were the most for a Purdue wrestler since Luke Manuel won 41 matches during the 2009-10 season and they earned him a spot on the season record wins list tied for 12th.
• One of three Boilermakers to win 30+ matches this season, a first for Purdue since 2009-10 ... one of four Boilermakers to finish with more takedowns since Cashé Quiroga’s 94 in 2013-14.
• Spent 13 weeks on InterMat’s rankings, ranging from Nos. 11-15 ... his time at No. 11 (2/6) marked the highest individual ranking of the season for a Purdue wrestler and the highest ranking since Chad Welch finished the 2015-16 season at No. 8 ... he finished the season ranked 14th.
• Had a pair of wins over top-10 wrestlers: No. 9 Ethan Ramos (9-7) and No. 6 Myles Amine of Michigan (6-4) ... Lydy was unranked when he beat Ramos, was 15th when he beat Amine ... the win over Amine stands as the highest ranked opponent a Purdue wrestler upended during the season ... Ramos held a 4-2 advantage over Lydy going into the final frame ... Lydy took Ramos down three times, including a blast with just seconds remaining, for a 9-7 decision at the Journeymen/My House Northeast Duals ... a pair of first period takedowns by Lydy quickly set the tone in his 6-4 dual win over Amine, an eventual All-American ... Lydy escaped twice in the third and held Amine off as time ticked away.
• Was clutch in overtime matches, winning 7-of-8 matches that were extended ... had two wins in SV1, four in TB1 and 1 in SV2.
• Went 3-2 as the No. 15-seed at the NCAA Championships ... a takedown in the first period held for Lehigh’s No. 4 Jordan Kutler to set Lydy back 4-1 in the blood round and denied him a spot on the podium ... began his NCAA run with a 6-2 win over Northwestern’s Johnny Sebastian ... eventual NCAA runner-up Mark Hall of Penn State sent Lydy into wrestlebacks, where takedowns in the first and third periods guided him to a 5-3 decision over Matt Finesilver of Duke ... he followed with his second upset of the season against North Carolina’s Ethan Ramos, knocking out the 10th-seeded Tar Heel 5-3 ... Lydy once again tallied takedowns in the bookend periods of the match for the victory.
• Qualified for his first NCAA Championships in dramatic fashion ... with just four seconds left, Lydy scored the winning takedown on No. 8 Ryan Christensen of Wisconsin to win 2-1 in the Big Ten Championships consolation quarterfinals ... placed fifth with a 3-2 win over No. 7 Joey Gunther of Iowa ... the fifth-place finish by Lydy the best at 174 since Luke Manuel was fifth in 2010.
• Avenged a dramatic loss to Sebastian of Northwestern, a pin that came at the final horn at the Michigan State Open, with some drama of his own, winning the dual matchup 2-1 (TB1) ... No. 11 Lydy and No. 19 Sebastian exchanged escapes in the second and third periods ... Sebastian took bottom first and Lydy rode for the full 30 seconds ... Lydy then had his turn on bottom and immediately escaped for the 2-1 advantage and ultimately the win.
• Wrestled above his No. 7-seed to place third at the Midlands Championships, matching Luke Manuel (2009) for the highest finish at the weight for the Boilermakers ... went 5-1 with his second win in three December meetings over C.J. Brucki of Central Michigan ... had his first of two wins this season over Indiana’s Devin Skatzka, taking a 4-2 match in sudden victory.
• Unseeded, Lydy placed eighth in a Cliff Keen Las Vegas Wrestling Invitational bracket that contained a tournament-high 14 nationally ranked wrestlers, including seven of the top 10 ... became the first Boilermaker 174-pounder to place since Luke Manuel was eighth in 2010 ... pinned No. 18 Will Schany of Virginia in 9:00 in his first match ... the pin was the first of his career ... also upended Brucki 7-5 in the blood round.
