The Boilermaker volleyball team will add nearly 15 years of coaching experience to the sidelines as Todd Garvey becomes the program's newest volunteer assistant coach, beginning August 1, 2015.
Garvey, the head coach at Mercy Academy in Louisville, Ky., for the last eight seasons, comes to Purdue after leading his teams to a 320-41 record and three state championships, including a 40-1 mark and Prep Volleyball's national title in 2014. The 2008 AVCA and USA Volleyball Magazine National Coach of the Year has led his teams to a Top 20 national ranking six of the last eight seasons with the Jaguars after taking over the program from his father, Ken, in 2007.
"Beyond the incredible accolades Todd has received for a relatively young coach, his strongest attributes are that he is a terrific person and extremely motivated to help players become successful," head coach Dave Shondell said. "This is no ordinary hire for a volunteer coaching position. Todd is a proven winner who relates extremely well to athletes of all ages. Our program has enjoyed exceptional volunteer coaches in the past and Todd will be another coach who will help Purdue Volleyball compete at the highest level. I feel very fortunate to have Todd join our staff."
A certified personal trainer and the strength and conditioning coach at Mercy Academy and for the Union Volleyball Club since 2006, Garvey served as an assistant coach under his father for six years before taking over the Mercy program. In his first two seasons, the Jaguars went 78-5 and won the 2008 Kentucky state championship with a 40-1 mark en route to a No. 2 national ranking. The team also won the state title in 2009 and 2014 and finished as runner-up in 2010 and 2012.
Garvey has been coaching club volleyball since 2002 beginning at MAVA in Louisville with the 13-1, 14-1 and 17-1 teams, helping the squads win seven USAV national qualifiers. In 2006, his 13's team won the USAV Junior Olympics title. In 2007, his 14's team finished second in the AAAU National Championship open division. In 2012, his 14's team finished fifth in the open division at the USAV Junior Olympics.
Since 2012, he has been coaching club at the Union Volleyball Club in Louisville, working with the 14-1 and 15-1 teams. In 2013, his team won the 15-Open division of the Wisconsin Dells Tournament and finished third at the AAU National Championship in the open division.
One of the AVCA's 30 Under Thirty Award recipients in 2009, Garvey received the Kentucky Region 6 High School Coach of the Year award seven times since 2007. He also coached in the AVCA Under Armour High School All-America game in 2008.
Garvey has been a member of the KHSAA Volleyball Committee since 2010 and a part of the AVCA Region 5 High School All-America committee since 2011. On the court, Garvey played at St. Xavier High School and went on to be a part of the University of Kentucky men's club team in 1998 and 1999.
Garvey is a 2003 graduate of the University of Louisville, with a degree in exercise physiology and sport administration.
