Stuardo Coaching Highlights at Purdue:
• 2016 ITA Ohio Valley Assistant Coach of the Year
Francisco Stuardo Vargas joined the Purdue men’s tennis team as an assistant coach in September 2016.
In addition to his duties with Purdue, he serves as the traveling coach for Christian Garin of Chile. With help from Stuardo Vargas, Garin has moved up to No. 18 in the world ATP rankings. Stuardo Vargas mentored Garin to his first ATP 250 title at the Fayez Sarofirm & Co. U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship in 2019. Stuardo Vargas worked with Andrej Martin of Slovakia at the 2020 U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Stuardo Vargas took on his third collegiate coaching post after spending nearly two years coaching professionally. In August 2016, Stuardo Vargas saw his two prized pupils, Hans Podlipnik-Castillo and Andrej Martin, take to the Olympic court in Rio de Janeiro. Podlipnik-Castillo qualified in doubles for Chile, and Martin played both singles and doubles for Slovakia.
While coaching Podlipnik-Castillo and Martin, the duo won five pro circuit doubles titles together and were runners-up at the Santiago Challenger in 2015. That same year, Podlipnik-Castillo and Martin competed on the grandest of tennis’ stages - the French Open, the US Open, and Wimbledon. Podlipnik-Castillo also earned a gold medal in doubles at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada.
In the ATP rankings, Podlipnik-Castillo achieved a career high at No. 157 on August 10, 2015, and Martin broke into the top 100 at No. 98 in July 2016. In the August 28, 2016 doubles rankings, Podlipnik-Castillo checked in at No. 65 and Martin at No. 87.
Stuardo Vargas also coached the Chilean team at the Davis Cup in September 2015. They earned a promotion to Zone Group 1 with a trio of 5-0 wins over Peru, Mexico and Venezuela in the finals.
Before coaching professionally, Stuardo Vargas played as a professional for eight months in 2014. He obtained an ATP high singles ranking of No. 1440 and a career-high doubles ranking of No. 1619. As of Sept. 12, 2016, Stuardo Vargas was listed at No. 1881.
Stuardo Vargas quickly found success after transferring to Toledo from Andres Bello University in his hometown of Santiago, Chile. During the 2013 season, he was the team leader in doubles wins with 17 total while racking up 16 singles victories. He was also named to the All-Mid-American Conference second team, and earned several team awards, including the Rockets’ Most Valuable Player, Newcomer of the Year, and Team Leadership Award.
Stuardo Vargas earned his bachelor’s degree in sport administration from Toledo in December 2013 and his associate degree in physical education from College of the Desert in December 2009. He also holds a graduate degree in sports management from Universidad Europea de Madrid.
Vargas is married to Camila Reyes Lauriani. He is the son of Jose Stuardo and Edith Vargas, and has two sisters, Constanza and Camila.
