Purdue men's basketball player Mike Robinson and softball pitcher Meagan Dooley have been named the male and female Purdue Athletes-of-the-Month for February. The award is presented by Twin City Dodge and WLFI-TV.
Robinson, a senior from Peoria, Ill. (Richwoods H.S.), was honored for his offensive and defensive leadership and hustle on the court for the Boilermakers in February. Playing an instrumental role in Purdue's 8-1 record for the month, he averaged 16.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. In the Boilermakers upset over sixth-ranked Michigan State, he pitched in with 16 points and six rebounds, while helping to limit Michigan State's Morris Peterson to five points on 2-of-9 shooting. He led the Boilermakers in scoring in four of the nine games, including a 20-point performance against Penn State and 23 in the loss at Indiana.
Dooley, a sophomore from Phoenix, Ariz. (Mountain Pointe H.S.), tossed two no-hitters in the month for the Boilermakers. Marking only the second and third time the feat has been accomplished by a Purdue pitcher, the two no-hitters were the first since April 19, 1994, when Deana Jackson hurled one in a 9-0 victory over IUPU-Fort Wayne. Dooley fired the first of the two on Feb. 19 in Purdue's 1-0 victory over Temple at the Triangle Classic in Raleigh, N.C., and the second a week later in a 3-0 win over Iowa State at the UCSB Invitational in Santa Barbara, Calif. She led the team with a 0.41 ERA in February, surrendering only two earned runs in 34.1 innings pitched. She earned victories in three of the Boilermakers' eight wins for month, tying her for the team lead.
