Purdue Cheerleaders Finish 6th in the Nation
Competition caps off great season.
April 15, 1999
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue Cheerleading squad claimed its best ever finish at the National Cheerleaders Association National Championships earlier this month. The Boilermaker finished in 6th place overall at the competition which was held in Daytona Beach, Fla.
"The competition just capped off a great season," Coach Al Enlow said. "We've been so busy this spring with the Women's Final Four and the men's tournament. We just got back on Monday from San Jose, and had to leave for the competition on Wednesday. We just learned the routine the week before and only performed it about eight times."
The championship was a two day event, finishing on Saturday, April 3. The Boilermakers were in fifth place after preliminary competition with a score of 7.74 out of 10.
There were 22 teams in competition to be named the nation's best squad. The Louisville Cardinals' cheerleaders were the winning squad, followed by Florida State and Georgia Tech. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State tied for fourth rounding out the top five.
The Purdue team earned an automatic bid for the event at a national camp prior to the season. The other way a team can qualify is by sending in a video in December and showing how well the team is performing technically.
The Boilermaker's team consisted of 22 members including:
