Purdue Captures Governor's Cup Boilermakers win all-sports competition with Indiana for fourth time in five years 
May 14, 2018 WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue captured the Governor's Cup for the fourth time in five years Sunday.
The title is the Boilermakers' first under second-year athletics director Mike Bobinski.
Purdue won by a 10.5-9.5 margin with its women's outdoor track & field team finishing higher than Indiana at the Big Ten Championships (second vs. fourth), which took place ironically in Bloomington.
Fall sports proved the difference as the Boilermakers opened a 3.5-1.5 lead, sweeping volleyball for the fifth straight year and picking up a key victory in football (their first since 2012). Indiana recorded a 4-3 advantage in winter sports, and the schools split eight spring sports points.
The all-sports competition dates to 2001-02. It originally was known as the Titan Series until 2004, when it was renamed the Crimson & Gold Cup. It became the Governor's Cup in 2013.
Points are awarded to the winning team in each of the schools' 20 shared sports. If the two teams do not meet during the regular season, the higher finisher at the Big Ten Championships is the point winner. In the case of ties, both teams get half a point.
In 17 years of competition, Purdue has captured the title seven times and Indiana eight times. Two years have ended in a tie.
Purdue won the 2013-14 Governor's Cup by a 12-8 margin for its first title since 2006-07, made it back-to-back titles with a 10-9 decision in 2014-15 and made it three in a row with a 12.5-7.5 verdict in 2015-16. The Boilermakers' 12.5 points are tied for the most ever by either school (also Indiana in 2008-09).
