WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Nine new members are joining Purdue University's Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Council at the annual council meeting in October. The 2001 appointments mark the most additions since the council's inception in 1993.
Included among the new members are: Anne (McMenamy) Adams (Volleyball, 1981), Cliff Benson (Football, 1983), Dave Griscom (Tennis, 1984), Mike Hansen (Baseball, 1986), Brad Hornor (Football, 1985), William A. Hoffer (Golf, 1971), Andrea Marek (Track, 1982), Roland Parrish (Track, 1975), and Laura (Newcomb) Titus (Basketball, 1981).
The council includes 24 members representing each of Purdue's varsity sports. Each appointed member serves a four-year term that can be renewed once. The criteria for selection includes those former Purdue student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in athletics and in their careers after graduation.
Created on June 3, 1993, by Athletics Director Morgan Burke, the council was formed to connect former athletes with the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics in addition to advising the department on its programs, image, facilities and overall development.
"The Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Council is a valuable forum for Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics," Burke said. "The more we utilize the knowledge of this group, the better off we are."
Additionally, the Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Council helps promote athletics and provides a communication link to former student-athletes, home communities and Purdue alumni while providing role models for current student-athletes.
"The council has helped our department spread the word through our former athletes," said Burke. "It bridges the gap between former athletes and the department."
During the fall, the council returns for its annual meetings during the P Awards weekend on the West Lafayette campus.
Burke borrowed the idea of an advisory council from Dennis Weidenaar, former Dean of the Krannert School of Management, following his appointment as director of athletics in 1992. Since then, the Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Council has produced a variety of accomplishments. The council has formulated the criteria and selection process for the Purdue Athletics Hall of Fame while participating in the selection of its members. Participation in the development of the P awards weekend and a range of projects, including technology for the Department of Athletics and the organization of a mini-career fair for student-athletes, are among other examples of the council's activities.
Members of the council benefit from their association with other council members and Intercollegiate Athletics, enabling them to stay in touch with the developments in athletics at Purdue and nationally. Council members are able to promote Purdue athletics while gaining exposure to current student-athletes, faculty and senior university leadership.
"The Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Council provides me the opportunity to be an ambassador for Purdue athletics," said council member Robert Dillingham (Football, 1969). "There are a number of opportunities throughout the year to encourage Purdue friends and alumni to be more committed."
"The council has been a great conduit and sounding board," said Burke. "Its members have been able spokespeople in carrying the word of Purdue athletics back to peers and constituents."
Council members are willing to be actively engaged on behalf of Intercollegiate Athletics and are committed to the vision of a nationally prominent athletic organization that is excellent in all respects. The membership reflects diversity in terms of sports, race, gender, age and geographical locations.
"The council is valuable to our department and has withstood the test of time," said Burke. "It has provided stability for the first eight years and we look for that to continue."
