Blaze, Ramos Wrestle On; #24 Purdue Holds 10th Place After Day 1 of Cliff Keen Invite

LAS VEGAS – No. 24 Purdue Wrestling currently resides in 10th place among 30 teams after a strong Day 1 of the 42nd annual Cliff Keen Invitational.

The early-season meet is traditionally regarded as the toughest regular season tournament in the sport, and that looks to be the case again this year with 12 of the top 25 teams competing at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

At the end of Day 1, the Boilermakers have 42.5 points to put them ahead of four teams that currently rank ahead of them in InterMat's tournament rankings. RAMOS' RUN CONTINUES Improving on his dominant bonus streak, No. 3 Matt Ramos continued his tear as one of the hottest wrestlers in the country. The national leader in technical falls entering the meet, the redshirt senior added two more to give himself nine on the season.

Ramos dominated Appalachian State's Noah Luna and Wyoming's Jack Braman with a total score of 36-3, notching tech falls in 3:22 and 4:00, respectively.

The undefeated Ramos advanced to Saturday's semifinal after a medical forfeit from NC State's No. 12 Vincent Robinson. BLAZE BATTLES ON Joining Ramos in the CKLV championship semis is No. 15 Joey Blaze. The sophomore from Perrysburg, Ohio, impressed with wins over Sacred Heart's Felix Lettini (10-2) and Oregon State's No. 24 Ethan Stiles (17-2) in the first two rounds.

In the 157-pound quarterfinal, Blaze was the underdog for the first time all season as he took on No. 5 Peyten Kellar from Ohio.

In a low-scoring, grinding affair, Blaze took control and never relented, sweating out a 2-0 decision and nabbing Purdue's first top-five win of the young season. KEY CONTRIBUTORS After the first session of action, No. 26 James Rowley earned a spot in the quarterfinal after extending his career-long winning streak to nine. He took down Northwestern's Jon Halvorsen with a 6-4 decision and defeated No. 19 Will Ebert of Binghamton, the highest ranked win of his career.

No. 26 Brody Baumann notched Purdue's first pin of the tournament over Harvard's Haden Bottiglieri in just 3:29. He earned another win with a 4-2 decision over Brody Conley from West Virginia in the consolation bracket.

Ben Vanadia earned two wins along with a medical forfeit to advance to the blood rounds in Session 2 in a talented 197-pound class. Hayden Filipovich scored a pair of decision wins in his second trip to CKLV.

Greyson Clark registered a tech fall and a sudden victory to go 2-2 in his Cliff Keen debut, and Isaac Ruble also earned a decision win in his first Vegas appearance. UP NEXT The Boilermakers are back at it again on Saturday morning, with Ramos and Blaze carrying the torch for the Old Gold & Black.

Ramos is slotted to face the 3-seed, No. 4 Troy Sprately from Oklahoma State. Blaze will go up against Northern Iowa's No. 6 Ryder Downey, the 3-seeded 157-pounder.

Session 3 of the Cliff Keen Invite will start at 1 p.m. ET at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The finals will begin at 6 p.m. ET, and all matches will be streamed live on FloWrestling. CURRENT TEAM STANDINGS (TOP 15)
