WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Daryn Wright smashed the program record in platform diving by 31 points while also eclipsing pool and meet records in the process, highlighting Saturday's events as action concluded at Purdue Swimming & Diving's three-day Purdue Invitational.
The Purdue women repeated as the team champions at the Purdue Invite for the first time since 2012 and 2015. The men opted to not enter many of their top swimmers in individual events as they focus on USA Swimming U.S. Open the first week of December in North Carolina.
With a time of 1:43.12, Blake Rowe eclipsed the Purdue freshman record in the 200 backstroke while winning the A final of the event. It was the last of 11 records (team/freshman/pool/meet) set by the Boilermakers at the midseason showcase.
Wright's huge list score of 390.45 headlined that group of 11 as a women's overall program record fell for the third straight day. Sophie McAfee (366.75) also eclipsed Emily Meaney's previous team record (359.30) in platform diving Saturday. Meaney's record had stood since the 2017 Big Ten Championships, the same night the pool record was set by Wright's fellow Team USA Olympian Jessica Parratto (Indiana). McAfee broke the 3-meter team record Thursday and Kathryn Ackerman eclipsed the 400 individual medley record Friday.
Jordan Rzepka's 106-point dive on a forward 2 ½ three-twist pike (5156B) in the final round powered the senior's first-career 500-point list (502.50). He improved on his fourth-best score in program history and joined Olympians David Boudia, Steele Johnson & Brandon Loschiavo as the only Boilermakers to post a 500-point list on the tower. Rzepka won a pair of events at the Purdue Invitational for the third year in a row.
Maxwell Blume (200 breast), Hannah Hill (100 free), Campbell Scofield (200 fly) and Reagan Mattice (1650 free) joined Rowe, Wright and Rzepka as Boilermakers to win event Saturday. Blume completed a sweep of the breaststroke events and Hill did likewise in the freestyle sprints. Scofield and Rowe were both event winners as freshmen.
The Boilermakers went 1-2-3 in both men's and women's platform diving as the event made its season debut Saturday. In the process, they completed a full sweep of the eight diving events contested over the three days at the Purdue Invitational (including team diving).
Abby Marcukaitis (1:54.86) became just the second Boilermaker in program history to break 1:55 in the 200 back, coming up just .25 hundredths shy of Jackie Smailis' team record (1:54.61) from 2017. Marckuaitis posted another NCAA provisional qualifying time (B Cut) in the process, her first of the meet coming on the leadoff leg of the 400 medley relay Thursday.
Rowe eclipsed Michael Juengel's freshman record (1:43.75) in the 200 back that had stood since 2020. He also posted a B Cut and moved into fourth place overall in program history. Scofield's winning time in the 200 fly (1:58.55) was also a B Cut, elevating the freshman into seventh place in program history. Scofield and Kate Mouser finished 1-2 in the 200 fly with a pair of top-10 times in the team record book. The Boilermakers accounted for five of the eight A finalists in the event.
Mattice led a 1-2-3 finish for the Purdue women in the mile, moving into the all-time top 10 with her lifetime best mark (16:31.13, B Cut). Adele Sands took second and Caitlin Hurley third. Hurley demonstrated her grit and versatility by racing in the A final of the 100 free about 30 minutes later.
Masy Folcik (200 breast), Abbie Kehmeier (200 back), Hill (100 free) and Ackerman (200 back) also moved up Purdue's all-time leaderboards. Freshmen divers Kaden Springfield and Tyler Willis added their names to the top-15 list in their team debuts in platform diving. Wright and Wills both ripped a 90-point dive as part of their big list scores.
Purdue's December meets include the men's swimmers at the U.S. Open (Dec. 4-7 in Greensboro), the divers at the USA Diving Winter Nationals (Dec. 8-15 in Bloomington) and selected women's swimmers at the CSCAA Open Water Nationals (Dec. 21 in Miami). The Boilermakers resume their dual meet schedule Friday, Jan. 10 with a home triple dual vs. Kentucky and Notre Dame. The Irish will only have women in attendance.
