WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – In a hard-fought one-score affair, the Purdue football team came up short in overtime against Northwestern on Saturday afternoon at Ross-Ade Stadium.
In the 26-20 defeat, the Boilermakers (1-7, 0-5 B1G) came back to tie the game from a deficit that was as large as 17-3 until the final 30 seconds of the first half.
Quarterbacks Hudson Card and Ryan Browne each took snaps, but Card was fed the lion's share in his first game back since suffering an injury at Wisconsin on October 5.
The senior from Austin, Texas, returned in a big way, completing 21-of-37 passes for 267 yards and a touchdown. Card spread the ball around well, connecting with eight different players through the air.
The receiving corps was led by trusty tight end Max Klare, who has now paced the Boilermaker receivers in six of the eight games this season. The sophomore standout caught a season-high six passes for 78 yards.
Devin Mockobee scored his third touchdown of the season, a tough one-yard run in the fourth quarter, and finished with 29 yards on 10 carries to lead Purdue on the ground.
Dillon Thieneman maintained his disruptive persona all around the field, leading the team with nine tackles (six solos) and a pass breakup.
Antonio Stevens nabbed his first career interception on a pass from Northwestern quarterback Ryan Hilinski in the second quarter and ultimately finished with seven tackles (five solos).
In his Purdue debut, sophomore receiver CJ Smith added another weapon to Card's arsenal and posted a solid four catches for 55 yards.
Trailing 17-3, Card tossed a six-yard dot to Jahmal Edrine 25 seconds before the break, cutting the deficit in half. Edrine logged a season-high five catches for 54 yards, including his second score as a Boilermaker.
After halftime, the Purdue defense stepped up and allowed just three points for the rest of regulation.
After a 24-yard Spencer Porath field goal cut Northwestern's lead to 17-13 near the end of the third quarter, the Wildcats (4-5, 2-4 B1G) answered with a field goal of their own.
Down 20-13 in the fourth quarter, the offense registered an 11-play, 75-yard drive to tie the game. Mockobee muscled his way through a pile of four Wildcat defenders, carrying multiple players on his back for a one-yard touchdown.
With the score tied 20-20 in overtime, Purdue took the ball first and opted to be aggressive, going for it on 4th-and-5 at the Wildcats' 20-yard line. Card's pass fell incomplete, turning it over to Northwestern.
The Wildcats punctuated the game with a walk-off touchdown pass, ending a promising Purdue rally.
