WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -  The Purdue volleyball team continued the opening weekend of the season with a 3-0 sweep of UMBC (25-20, 25-20, 25-17) on Saturday night at Holloway Gymnasium. The Boilermakers improved to 2-0 on the year while the Retrievers move to 0-2.

Eva Hudson had a match-high 15 kills with one error and hit .500, while Chloe Chicoine posted a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs, second-most on the team. Taylor Anderson dished out 34 assists and Ali Hornung had 14 digs to lead the team. Middles Raven Colvin and Lourdes Myers each recorded five block assists.

Lizzie Carr secured a career-high performance behind an errorless six kills on 15 swings (.400%) in addition to a career-high four blocks.

Purdue totaled 46 kills on the day on 105 attempts with six errors for a .381 attacking percentage. The Old Gold and Black picked up 48 digs and 10 team blocks, making it the second consecutive match with double-digit blocks.
UMBC was held to a.165 attacking percentage and just two team blocks.

The three-set match featured three lead changes, two in the second set and one in the third.

The Boilermakers took the opening point of the match and held an early 3-1 lead on a Hudson kill. The visitors came back to tie it at 4-4, and again at 5-5 and 6-6 before a 4-0 Purdue run made it a 10-6 set. A pair of kills by Chicoine capped the run. The Retrievers then turned in a 3-0 streak of their own to cut their deficit to one, at 10-9. The home team's advantage stretched back to three, at 12-9, but both teams then went back and forth before three straight Purdue points made it 18-14. The string ended with a pair of block assists by Myers.

Consecutive points out of a UMBC timeout made it a two-point set, and the Retrievers continued to claw back and cut the deficit to just one, at 20-19. That's as close as the visitors could get though, as the Boilermakers quickly took two straight points to make it 22-19. Purdue won the last three to close out the set, 25-20, thanks to Colvin with a block assist and the winning kill.

Purdue opened the match with 15 kills with two errors for a .394 attacking percentage.

Colvin and the Boilermakers didn't lose any momentum into the second set, as she rifled off back-to-back kills to fuel a 3-0 start. Two Hudson kills around a UMBC point made it 6-3 before the Retrievers scored the next five to take an 8-6 lead. Purdue quickly answered to tie the set at 8-8 with the help of a pair of errors. After trading points to get to 11-11, consecutive Retriever kills gave them a 13-11 lead. Colvin halted the run with a kill, and the two teams again traded points until it was 16-14, UMBC.

The Boilermakers then rattled off four in a row to take an 18-16 lead. The run was fueled by Rachel Williams, who made her collegiate debut and got an ace on her first career serve. UMBC got one back before another 4-0 streak by the Old Gold and Black made 22-17. The Retrievers took three of the next four to cut the Purdue advantage to 23-20, but it was not enough. A service error set up set point, and a Chicoine ace sealed a 2-0 lead for the Boilermakers with a 25-20 final.

The second set saw the Boilermakers notch 15 kills on 38 attempts with just one error (.368), while the Retrievers had 11 kills on 36 attempts with three errors (.222).

A pair of errors gave UMBC an early 2-0 advantage in the third set, but the Boilermakers quickly responded with three in a row, capped by a pair of blocks, to take a 3-2 lead. It was 4-4 when Purdue rallied off a 5-0 run to take a 9-4 lead. Two kills by Lizzie Carr helped lead the rally. A UMBC timeout and run-stopping point made it 9-5, though the Boilermakers answered with another three-point string to extend the advantage to 12-5. The Retrievers followed with three of their own before Hudson rifled off a kill to end the rally. Sophomore Julia Kane followed with a serving tear, recording her first career ace as she kept UMBC on their heels while behind the serve line for four consecutive points to give Purdue the 17-8 score advantage.

Points were traded until the advantage was stretched to 10 thanks to an attack error and another Carr kill to make it 21-11. UMBC staved off a pair of match points before a service error sealed the set, 25-17, and a 3-0 victory for the Boilermakers.

Purdue had 16 kills on 34 attempts with three errors (.382) in the third set and UMBC was held to nine kills on 36 attempts with seven errors (.056).
