PARIS – Purdue Swimming & Diving is well represented at the games of the XXXIII Olympiad as Boilermakers will compete in five events while representing five nations.
Competing in the aquatic events in Paris includes 10-meter divers Brandon Loschiavo (USA), Daryn Wright (USA), Maycey Vieta (Puerto Rico) and Jaye Patrick (Latvia) as well as Team USA's synchronized 3-meter diving team of Greg Duncan and Tyler Downs. In the swimming events, alumnus Nikola Aćin (4x100m free relay for Serbia) and incoming graduate transfer Matheo Mateos (200m IM for Paraguay) are both scheduled to race.
Aćin, Downs and Loschiavo are now two-time Olympians after also representing their countries in the same events three years ago in Tokyo (Downs was an individual qualifier on 3-meter in 2021). They've joined David Boudia (USA, 2008, 2012, 2016), Gyongyver Lakos (Hungary, 1996 & 2000), Javier Diaz (Mexico, 2000 & 2004) and Jinq En Phee (Malaysia, 2016 & 2020) as Purdue Swimming & Diving alumni to be multi-year Olympians.
Boudia is part of USA Diving's coaching staff this year in Paris while experiencing his fourth Olympic Games. He won a pair of medals in 10-meter diving events in both 2012 and 2016. Boudia's mentor and longtime Purdue diving Adam Soldati also served as member of the USA Diving coaching staff at four consecutive Olympics from 2008 to 2020. The U.S. Olympic Team Trials last month served as Soldati's final meet, choosing to step down as the coach of the Boilermakers to focus on his health after being diagnosed with ALS in February.
Loschiavo did not learn that he had qualified for Paris until Thursday, July 25, approximately 24 hours before the Opening Ceremonies. He had finished as the runner-up on 10-meter at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in June but the initial Olympic quota spot distribution for diving did not allot a second 10-meter bid to Team USA. That changed when a qualifier had to withdraw from the games this week. Loschiavo originally earned USA Diving its Olympic quota spot in the event when he finished eighth at the World Aquatics Championships in February. But that bid went to the event winner at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Carson Tyler, who also qualified individually on 3-meter.
Patrick, Vieta and Wright are the Boilermakers' first female divers to qualify for the Olympians since Mary Beth Dunnichay (USA) in 2008, who made it as a 15-year-old before enrolling at Purdue in the fall of 2011. Patrick and Vieta will also be the first Purdue divers to compete for a nation besides the USA at the Olympic Games. Patrick said earlier this month she's Latvia's first-ever Olympic diver and Vieta is set to become the first diver to represent Puerto Rico at the Olympics since 2004.
Duncan & Downs are the first Boilermakers to qualify for the Olympics in synchronized 3-meter diving. Synchro events at the Olympics date back to 2000 and Purdue's previous qualifiers had all been in 10-meter synchro.
