ATHENS, Ga. – Sophie McAfee finished fourth nationally in her first career championship final at the NCAA Championships and Daryn Wright was also an All-American on 3-meter for Purdue on day 2 of diving events at the national championship meet.
McAfee earned All-America honors on 3-meter for the second year in a row and is now a three-time All-American. Friday, she accounted for the Purdue women's top showing at the NCAA Championships since Maycey Vieta won bronze on platform in 2021.
Wright earned her first career All-America honor, placing 11th among the 49-diver field in the prelim to qualify for the consolation final, in which she took fifth. McAfee and Wright gave the Purdue women two All-Americans in a springboard event for the first time since 2018.
The Boilermakers have now had a women's diver earn All-America accolades in 19 of the last 20 seasons dating back to 2004.
McAfee improved on her prelim list score by four points while matching her fourth-place showing in the prelim in the championship final. She overcame a slow start in the prelim with high scores of 58.5, 63 and 63 over rounds three through five – all three scores ranking among the top three of the 49-diver field. That stretch clinched the junior her first career full-fledged All-America honor as a championship finalist.
McAfee and Wright are among the five Boilermakers competing on platform Saturday to close out the NCAA Championships and college season. They'll be joined by Jaye Patrick, Jenna Sonnenberg and Maycey Vieta. The prelim is set for noon, the consolation final at 5:15 p.m. and the championship final at approximately 7:30 p.m.
