WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – As championship finalists on 1-meter, Purdue divers Sophie McAfee and Daryn Wright were the Boilermakers' top finishers Thursday while extending their streaks of top-10 finishes at the Big Ten Championships.
McAfee placed fifth and Wright seventh, leading the way as Purdue racked up 55 team points in the event. McAfee is now 7-for-7 in top-10 finishes in her career at Big Tens. Thursday was Wright's first career championship final at Big Tens but the sophomore is now 4-for-4 in career top 10s at the conference championships. McAfee matched her best finish at Big Tens.
McAfee (296.05) and Wright (290.40) each improved on their list scores from the prelim to the final. While both Boilermakers qualified for NCAAs in all three diving events last year, their best events are still to come this week with 3-meter on the schedule for Friday and platform Saturday.
Maggie Love qualified for the B final (placing 16th overall) of the 200 individual medley as Purdue's top individual finisher in a swimming event Thursday.
Also scoring for the Boilermakers in the individual events Thursday were Jaye Patrick and Kaitlin Simons in the 1-meter prelim as well as Kate Mouser and Kate Beavon in the C final of the 500 freestyle.
Kendal Schreder (22.99 in 50 free) and Reagan Mattice (4:50.39 in 500 free) posted lifetime bests while finishing among the top 30 in the prelims of their events. Ana Rojas (22.99) also broke 23 seconds in the 50 free for the first time at Purdue.
Fives were wild for Kendra Bowen as the fifth-year swimmer won heat five of the 50 free prelims.
The Boilermakers' 400 medley relay team finished on the podium, taking eighth with a time of 3:39.44. Abby Marcukaitis and Masy Folcik represented Purdue on the backstroke and breaststroke legs of a medley relay for the second night in a row, teaming with Keira Kask (butterfly) and Bowen (freestyle) Thursday.
The Big Ten Championships at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center continue Friday with a focus on the 100-yard events in the backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. The 200 free, 400 IM, 3-meter diving and 800 free relay are also featured Friday. Swimming prelims begin at 10 a.m. ET, diving prelims start at noon and the finals sessions gets underway at 5 p.m. with the 3-meter consolation final.
