SUGAR LAND, Texas – Jordan Morales and Jackson Dannelley teamed up for a combined shutout in Purdue Baseball's 6-0 opening day win vs. Stony Brook as the Boilermakers blanked the opposition in their season opener for the first time since 1991.
Purdue raced out to a 3-0 lead after two innings and put the game away with three more runs over its final two frames at the plate. The Boilermakers improved to 5-0 in season openers under head coach Greg Goff.
Connor Caskenette connected for a two-run homer to right field in the seventh inning along with catching the shutout. A double from Jo Stevens and a pair of sacrifice flies helped Purdue score twice in the second inning as well.
FRIDAY NOTABLES
• The Boilermakers improved to 8-1 since 2022 at Constellation Field in Sugar Land. Purdue has won seven of its last eight season openers since 2017.
• Jackson Dannelley joined Aaron Suval as active Boilermakers with an 11-out save.
• Jordan Morales and Dannelley needed only 106 pitches in the combined shutout. Morales threw 62 pitches vs. 21 batters faced over 5 1/3 innings. He did not issue a walk. The game was completed in just two hours and 20 minutes.
• Purdue's Opening Day starting pitcher (Morales) was unscored upon for the second year in a row. Khal Stephen accomplished the feat last season vs. Holy Cross. Since 2000, Tanner Andrews (2018 vs. Western Michigan) is the only other starter to keep the opposition off the board on Opening Day.
• Couper Cornblum drew a pair of walks and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, extending his on-base streak to 21 consecutive games dating back to last season.
• Logan Sutter (single), Brody Chrisman (single) and Luke Gaffney (walk) all reached base safely in their first Purdue at-bats Friday.
Dannelley walked the SBU cleanup hitter to load the bases with one out in the sixth inning, bringing the potential go-ahead run to the plate. But he responded by retiring the next six batters he faced and 11 of the final 13 altogether to escape the jam. The Seawolves did not bring the tying run to the plate for the remainder of the day.
Morales worked a pair of 1-2-3 innings and retired the first batter in five of the six frames he started. The lefty retired SBU's dynamic leadoff man Evan Fox all three times they faced off.
Brody Chrisman, Thomas Green and Caskenette teamed up to cut down a runner at the plate for the second out of the fourth inning. Brett Paulsen was unsuccessful in trying to score from first base on a double into the left field corner.
Stevens' double and the sac flies from Green and Cornblum in the second inning all went to the opposite field. Chrisman's infield single ignited the rally. Green and Stevens teamed up for a double steal in the eighth with Stevens sliding in safely at home on the back side of the play.
Logan Sutter connected for a two-out, two-strike line drive into center field for an RBI single in the first inning as the Boilermakers capitalized on walks to Couper Cornblum and Luke Gaffney. Sutter also doubled Friday.
The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. ET.
