KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Purdue's Daryn Wright claimed silver on 10-meter Tuesday to clinch a return trip to the World Aquatics Championships while medaling for the third year in a row at the USA Diving Winter Nationals.
With the men's 10-meter final still to come Wednesday at 11:45 a.m. ET, the Boilermakers have posted eight top-10 individual finishes at Winter Nationals. Wright (3rd), Sophie McAfee (5th) and Maycey Vieta (6th) gave Purdue three of the top six finishers in Tuesday's 10-meter final. McAfee climbed from 20th in the prelim to fifth in the final thanks to a 58.9-point improvement on her list score from the prelim to the semifinal.
Alumnus Greg Duncan (6th) and National Letter of Intent signee Zach Welsh (10th) were top-10 finishers in Tuesday's 3-meter final. Max Miller (6th), Holden Higbie (7th) and NLI signee Avery Worobel (10th) did likewise in Saturday's 1-meter competitions.
Wright's semifinal list score of 318.55 moved the sophomore into 10th place in program history on 10-meter. With the scoring being cumulative across the semi and final, it also put her in excellent position to medal. She placed third with a two-list total of 586.05 but was awarded the silver due to the second-place finisher – Louisville's Else Praasterink – being an international competitor from The Netherlands.
The World Aquatics Championships are set for Feb. 2-18 in Doha, Qatar. Olympian Delaney Schnell, the 2023 NCAA champion on platform, won gold Tuesday on 10-meter to claim USA Diving's other individual bid in the event at Worlds. Wright also competed for USA Diving at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest. She has now won gold (2021), bronze (2022) and silver (2023) on 10-meter at the last three Winter Nationals.
With the cumulative scoring also in play for the men's 10-meter final Wednesday, alum Brandon Loschiavo (443.25, 2nd) and Jordan Rzepka (402.55, 4th) will both enter the day in medal contention. NLI signee Tyler Wills (374.35, 6th) is also a finalist. The top two finishers will earn bids to the World Aquatics Championships.
