NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – Senior Kate Beavon finished the 5,000-meter test of endurance under an hour and among the top 10 for the second year in a row, leading the way as Purdue women's swimming placed 5th of 21 in the team scoring at the CSCAA Open Water Championship on Sunday morning in Biscayne Bay.
Beavon placed seventh among the 110-swimmer field, finishing with a time of 58:28.73. She dropped 4:41.87 off her winning time (1:03.09.6) from the event last year, which was held at Lone Star Lake near Lawrence, Kansas.
Reagan Mattice (1:00:05.69, 15th) and Abby Jahns (1:01:15.06, 34th) also accounted for scoring finishes to give Purdue its fifth-place team showing. Mattice impressed by finishing among the 86th percentile in her open water debut. Jahns was among the top third of the field.
Evie Sierra (1:03:00.79, 55th) and Madeline Greaves (1:05:06.55, 86th) also represented the Boilermakers on Sunday. Sierra finished among the top half of the field and Greaves made her debut at the event.
Purdue joined team champion Rice (3 of top 9), Northwestern, Villanova and Miami (Fla.) as the only schools with two of the top 15 finishers. In turn, those schools comprised the top five in the team standings.
