WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue swimming & diving welcomes teams from South Florida to Southern California and Maryland to Missouri to the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center this week for the return of the three-day, six-session Purdue Invitational.
Action is set for Wednesday to Friday with swimming prelims beginning daily at 10:30 a.m. Springboard diving prelims get underway at 1 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Platform diving will be featured Friday, with prelims at 11 a.m. Finals sessions are set for 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday before moving up to 4 p.m. Friday. With the first heat of the mile projected to begin about 1:30 p.m. Friday coupled with the earlier start time, there is not expected to be much downtime in Friday's full schedule.
Admission is free for all sessions of the meet at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
The three-day, six-session Purdue Invitational (Nov. 16-18) moves to a full weekday schedule this year. It will be contested from Wednesday to Friday due in part to a home football game on Saturday, Nov. 19.
The Boilermakers are hosting the midseason showcase for the 10th time as a co-ed meet since the Burke Aquatic Center opened in August 2001. However, this year marks the first time it is being held with a full weekday schedule and also the first time since 2009 and 2010 that the Boilermakers are hosting in consecutive years. Saturday's home football game led to the weekday schedule format.
This year's field features 17 teams representing 11 universities. Cal Baptist Louisville, Missouri State, Northwestern and Southern Illinois join Purdue will full co-ed representation. The FIU women, Illinois State women, Marshall women, Navy men's swimmers and Indiana State women's divers will also be in attendance. Among the field of visiting teams, Missouri State (nine), Louisville (seven), Southern Illinois (seven) and FIU (five) have made the most appearances at the Purdue Invitational. Cal Baptist and Marshall are the newcomers this year.
The Boilermakers have won the Purdue Invitational eight times – five times by the men and three times by the women. There could be as many as 36 countries represented at the meet this year.
Among active Boilermakers, 55 student-athletes (23 women, 22 men) have scored at the Purdue Invitational during their careers. Brady Samuels (2021), Michael Juengel (2019), Maggie Love (2021) and Kendra Bowen (2019) have all scored in four individual events at a Purdue Invite. Samuels eclipsed Purdue's team record in the 100 butterfly and also set freshman benchmarks in the 100 free and 100 back at the meet last year. Hannah Hill (50 free in 2021) and Juengel (200 back in 2019) also eclipsed freshman records at the Purdue Invite.

INVITATIONAL UPDATES IN THE DIVE WELL
• This year's schedule at the Purdue Invitational features some notable changes for diving. Friday's platform competition will be comprised of prelims and finals – similar to the championship season – for the first time ever at the meet. Previously, it was contested as a finals-only event on the final day of the invite.
• Team diving will also be featured as a non-scoring exhibition to open the finals sessions Wednesday (women) and Thursday (men). Each team that chooses to compete will be comprised of three divers, with each diver executing two dives from the same board – 1-meter, 3-meter, platform. Because the Purdue men only have two divers on the roster this year, sophomore breaststroke specialist Luke Fortner was tapped to handle 1-meter after he demonstrated an ability to execute flips and "clean" entries at a team event.
• With diving coaches from Wisconsin, Yale, Utah and UCLA leading the way as the authors of the proposal, there's a push to make team diving an annual scored event at conference championship meets and the NCAA Championships. The event was designed to be diving's equivalent of a relay race. The format (3 divers, 2 dives per board) is thought to be more inclusive at the college level than synchronized events.
• The addition of team diving to the finals sessions this week also means the springboard finals will be contested simultaneously Wednesday (men on 1-meter, women on 3-meter) and Thursday (women on 1-meter, men on 3-meter) beginning at 6:50 p.m.
NAVY SENIORS HONORED AS SERVICE ASSIGNMENTS ANNOUNCED ON THURSDAY
• This year, day 2 of the Purdue Invitational on Thursday coincides with the annual service assignments announcement day at the Naval Academy. Navy's seniors in attendance at the Purdue Invite will be recognized as part of a ceremony at the pool before Thursday's finals session. As their teammates did at the 2017, 2019 and 2021 Purdue Invitationals, Navy's seniors will stand on the bulkhead in the middle of the pool and learn their assignments in real time as a member of the program's travel party announces the assignments on the pool PA system.
WELCOME BACK
• Missouri State is making its meet-record ninth appearance by a visiting team, missing only the 2003 and 2019 editions. Louisville is making its seventh appearance, sitting out only the 2015 edition over the last 15 years.
• FIU is the only visiting team to compete at each of the last five Purdue Invitationals. FIU head coach Randy Horner is a Missouri State alumnus and served as an assistant coach with the Bears for eight years, forming the link that led to FIU's addition to the Purdue Invite. The Golden Panthers have won eight consecutive Conference USA titles and finished second to Louisville at the 2019 Purdue Invite.
• Northwestern and Southern Illinois are also back at the Purdue Invitational. Both schools from the Land of Lincoln attended the first two editions of the Purdue Invite (2003, 2005) and SIU remained a regular through 2017, with the Salukis' seventh appearance ranking second behind only conference rival Missouri State. Meanwhile, the Northwestern women won the meet the last year in their first appearance at the Purdue Invite since the inaugural co-ed edition in 2005. The Wildcats join Ohio State (2009 and 2010) and Indiana (2017) as Big Ten teams to have full co-ed representation at the Purdue Invite.
REPEAT APPEARANCES BY VISITING TEAMS

BOILERMAKERS BACK ON CAMPUS
• Among the notable Boilermakers returning for the Purdue Invitational include All-American Caitlin Hamilton and longtime public address announcer Andy Ross. Meanwhile, Marshall assistant coach James Bretscher is the brother of Purdue All-American and 2020 Big Ten Diver of the Year Emily (Bretscher) Pfeiffer. James was an All-American swimmer at NC State.
• A Bloomington-Normal native and swimmer at Purdue from 2010 to 2013, Hamilton was hired as the head coach at Illinois State in May 2019. She broke program records in all three distance freestyle events and finished top eight in the mile when the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center served as the host of the NCAA Championships in 2010. She was also an honorable mention All-American in the 500 and 1,650 free the following year.
• The youngest of Dan and Sally Ross' three sons, Andy Ross grew up around the program and announced his first Purdue meet in 2008 at the age of 13. He swam at Southern Illinois, competing at the 2015 Purdue Invitational and graduating in 2017. He returned to his PA seat for the 2017, 2019 and 2021 editions of the meet and is back in town again this week, flying home from his residence in New York City. Ross helped make the on-deck atmosphere at the 2017 Purdue Invitational one of the most memorable parts of a meet that also featured Olympic gold medalists Caeleb Dressel (Florida) and Lilly King (Indiana). As a multi-talented journalist, Ross contributed to NBC's coverage of the most recent editions of the summer and winter Olympic Games while also covering the FINA World Championships and other prominent international swimming events for FINA.com.
