WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 9 Purdue Boilermakers (15-3, 6-2 Big Ten) were upended by the Maryland Terrapins (12-8, 3-5 Big Ten) in three sets 22-25, 19-25, 23-25.
The Boilermakers were within reach of pushing the match to a fourth set with a 21-15 lead in the third game, but nation's leader in blocks contained Purdue in the final stretch, recording three blocks in the process of the squad's run to take the match.
The loss marked the first time Purdue was swept in Holloway in four years (last: vs. No. 5 Wisconsin, 9/29/2018).
Fifth-year transfer Hannah Clayton led the team with a .353 clip behind eight kills and one error on 17 swings, her most efficient match in six outings (last: .467 vs. #8 Minnesota, 9/23). Meanwhile, freshman Eva Hudson produced 11 kills to lead the team.
Sophomore Raven Colvin led the blocking effort with seven stuffs (two solo, five assisted), coming within one block of her season-high. As a team, Purdue totaled nine blocks.
The back row was led by Maddie Schermerhorn's 16 digs. The senior added an ace and four assists in the match.
The Boilermakers and Terrapins will meet again in College Park during Thanksgiving week. The penultimate match of the season is slated for a 7 p.m. ET start on Wednesday, November 23 and will be streamed on B1G+.
No. 9 Purdue will return to Holloway on Wednesday for a midweek showdown vs. No. 3 Nebraska at 8 p.m. ET. Fans can watch on Big Ten Network.
