PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – The Purdue men's golf team could get nothing going on day one of the NCAA Regionals at the PGA National Resort's Champion Course, sitting in 12th place after 18 holes.
The Boilermakers shot an opening-round score of 17-over par 305, to sit 20 shots behind top-seeded and No. 3-ranked Vanderbilt (285). South Florida is second at 2-over par 290, Notre Dame is third at 4-over par 292, Davidson is fifth at 293 and Florida and College of Charleston is tied for fifth at 6-over par 294, putting Purdue 11 shots off the pace to advance to Nationals.
Playing at the site of PGA Tour's Honda Classic, good scores were tough to come by for the field. The average score of the 75 golfers was almost 4-over par at 75.63. Six of the 18 holes yielded five or fewer birdies and the 75 players combined for 92 holes of double-bogey or worse.
Purdue recorded just nine birdies on the day and five double bogeys or worse. All five of the double bogeys or worse came from Purdue hitting the ball in the water on the back nine.
Purdue started on the difficult back nine as the Boilermakers' five golfers played holes 10 through 18 in a combined 13-over par. Purdue played the front nine in 11-over par.
Joe Weiler led the Boilermakers with a 3-over par 75, good for 33rd place after 18 holes. Herman Sekne and Nick Dentino shot 4-over par 76, good for a 41st-place tie. Andrew Farraye was at 6-over par 78 in 54th place and Cole Bradley shot 7-over par 79, good for 59th place.
Purdue will tee off hole No. 10 in Tuesday's second round, starting at 8:55 a.m. ET, and be paired with San Diego and Charleston Southern.
