WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. – The bats were hot on Senior Day, leading Purdue softball (22-29, 5-15 Big Ten) to an 8-2 victory over Rutgers (25-28, 3-17 Big Ten). In the final home game of the year, the Boilers recorded the most runs in a Big Ten game this season and most overall since March 13 vs. Bucknell.
With the result, Purdue took the series, 2-1 over Rutgers.
In the most decisive Big Ten victory of the season, Purdue recorded a trio of home runs, including two from its seniors, despite being out-hit 7-10 in the game. Additionally, Alex Echazarreta and Kiara Dillon each registered a double.
Senior shortstop Rachel Becker set the tone, leading off the Boilermakers with a home run in the team's first appearance at the plate. Meanwhile, Jade Moy followed it up with a homer of her own just minutes later. Senior Kaeley Hallada cracked one of her own in the fifth inning for 2 RBI
Senior captains Becker and Hallada led the team with two runs apiece. Becker also recorded a hair of hits and a walk to go 3-for-3 from the plate. Meanwhile, Echazarreta led the team with three RBI, thanks to a double with the bases loaded in the second inning.
The game-winning run came on Dillon's double in the second inning, which allowed freshman Olivia McFadden to score.
In the circle, senior righty Brenna Smith secured the victory, her fifth of the season, following 5.1 innings, where she allowed just one run after facing 25 batters.
The Boilermakers front-loaded the game, scoring six runs in the first two innings, and held the Scarlet Knights scoreless until the top of the fifth.
Purdue has one weekend remaining in the regular season and are slated to make the trip to Iowa City to take on the Hawkeyes for the final three games of the year. The series will begin Friday at 5 p.m. ET and will be streamed on B1G+.
