NAPLES, Fla. – The No. 23 Purdue men's golf team played a consistent round up-and-down the lineup, sitting in fifth place after 18 holes at the prestigious Calusa Cup held at Calusa Pines Golf Club.
The Boilermakers totaled a 2-over par 290 for fifth place. No. 16 Florida leads after 18 holes with a 12-under par 276. No. 11 Georgia Tech is five shots back at 7-under par 281 and No. 17 Wake Forest is in third at 3-under par 285. No. 8-ranked Georgia is fourth at 1-under par 287, three shots ahead of both Purdue and No. 1 Oklahoma, both at 2-over par.
The tournament consists of just nine teams with seven of them ranked in the nation's top 23. Also included in the field is No. 22 Clemson, Iowa and Marquette.
The Boilermakers struggled a bit on the front nine, but regrouped nicely on the back nine. The Boilermakers' five player played the back nine in 1-under par after playing the front nine a combined 8-over par.
Leading Purdue was senior Cole Bradley, who fired a 2-under par 70, good for ninth place after 18 holes. Bradley had three birdies, one bogey and 14 pars on his round.
Herman Sekne and Joe Weiler are tied for 21st at 1-over par 73. Sekne started his round with a double-bogey on the first hole and was forced to play catch-up all day, ending a streak of 12 straight rounds or even-par or better scores for the Oslo native. Weiler was 1-under par through six holes, before a double-bogey on No. 7 dropped him back off the pace.
Andrew Farraye is tied for 26th at 2-over par 74. Farraye led the team with four birdies on the day.
Luke Prall is tied for 36th at 5-over par 77. Prall was 5-over par through six holes, but played the final 12 holes in even-par to gain some momentum heading into Monday's second round.
Purdue will be paired with Oklahoma and Georgia in Monday's second round, teeing off hole No. 1, at 12:45 p.m. ET.
