FRENCH LICK, Ind. – The No. 25 Purdue men's golf team moved up one spot and gave itself a chance at a Big Ten Championships with a solid second round on a windy moving day at the Pete Dye Course at the French Lick Resort.
The Boilermakers totaled a 7-over par 295 for a 36-hole total of 6-over par 582 (287-295) to find themselves five shots off the team lead entering tomorrow's final round.
Michigan State, the 18-hole leader by eight shots, saw its lead dwindle to one shot totaling a 36-hole score of 1-over par 577 (276-301) to lead No. 19 Illinois, who sits in second place at 2-over par 578 (286-292). Purdue is third and is followed by Northwestern (+8), Maryland (+9) and Wisconsin (+10).
The course was set up to play difficult in round two as many hole locations were placed in tough spots on the already-difficult greens at the Pete Dye Course and coupled with a strong southerly wind, the average score rose from 74.23 in round one to 75.90 in the second round with just four individuals breaking par with one round in the 60s.
Purdue struggled on the front nine, but righted the ship on the back nine to give the Boilermakers a shot in tomorrow's final round. Purdue managed just two birdies as a team on the back nine, but recorded just two bogeys and two double-bogeys and managed to record 38 pars among its five players on the back nine. With par being a good score this week, Purdue leads the field with 120 pars; Wisconsin is second with 110 pars.
Purdue has four players in the top 12 after 36 holes, led by Joe Weiler and Andrew Farraye at 1-over par 145. Weiler recorded 16 pars today en route to a 1-over par 73, following up his even-par round of 72 yesterday (72-73=145). Farraye shot a 75 after an opening-round 70 (70-75=145).
Cole Bradley recorded his second straight 73 to sit in a 12th place tie at 2-over par 146 (73-73=146). Herman Sekne totaled a 74 to follow up his 72, to tie Bradley in 12th (72-74=146). Sekne hit only two greens on the front nine (birdied Nos. 2 and 8), but played the front nine in 1-under par, managing just nine putts on his first nine holes.
Nels Surtani is tied for 46th after a round of 75 today (78-75=153).
Purdue will be in the final pairing of the tournament on Sunday, paired with Illinois and Michigan State, beginning at 9:25 a.m. ET, off hole No. 1.
