  • Purdue's 1-under par is its first under-par round in the Big Ten Championships since the 2009 championships played in State College, Pennsylvania (3rd round).
  • Andrew Farraye has now recorded a 70 or better in three of his last five rounds.
  • Herman Sekne has 17 rounds of even-par or better, the eighth most in a season in school history. He has recorded even-par scores or better in 68.0 percent of his rounds (17-of-25), currently the highest percentage in school history.
  • Joe Weiler has 15 rounds of even par or better this season.
 
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 25 Purdue men's golf team surged in the middle part of the round, but ran out of steam late in the opening round of the Big Ten Golf Championships, sitting in fourth place after 18 holes at the Pete Dye Course in French Lick, Indiana.
 
The Boilermakers were neck-and-neck with the lead in the middle portion of the round, but played the back nine in a combined 3-over par as a team to fall 11 shots behind leader Michigan State, which recorded no bogeys as a team over its last 11 holes.
 
The Boilermakers totaled a 1-under par 287 while Michigan State shot a 12-under par 276 to lead second-place Wisconsin (-4, 284), which also surged late on the front nine, by eight shots. Illinois is third at 2-under par 286, one shot ahead of Purdue. Northwestern and Penn State are tied in fifth at 3-over par 291.
 
Andrew Farraye, playing in his first Big Ten Championships, pieced together a strong round to lead Purdue with an opening-round 70, good for seventh place. Farraye birdied hole Nos. 5, 7 and 9 on the front, then withstood a triple-bogey on 10 with three straight birdies on 12, 13 and 14 to move to 3-under par, before a bogey on 17 dropped him to 2-under par for his round.
 
Herman Sekne and Joe Weiler each recorded even-par scores of 72 to sit in T-17th after 18 holes. Cole Bradley shot a 1-over par 73 (T-24th) and Nels Surtani recorded a 6-over par 78 (T-55th).
 
Purdue will tee off round two on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. ET, off hole No. 1. Purdue will be paired with Penn State and Northwestern.
