WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Belmont scored in four of the first five innings, building a nine-run lead by the midpoint of the game en route to defeating Purdue baseball 11-1 Saturday at Alexander Field.
The Bruins (25-14) scored multiple runs in the second, third and fifth innings. The Boilermakers (22-12) escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first thanks to a slick 6-4-3 double play started by shortstop Evan Albrecht. Purdue also turned a 4-6-3 twin killing to escape another bases-loaded jam in the sixth.
Troy Viola connected for a towering blast that tightroped the left field and stayed fair for his fifth home run of the season.
The Boilermakers failed to get an out on sacrifice bunts in the second and fifth innings. Belmont capitalized on the extra out to post a pair of big innings, scoring seven of its runs in those frames – three in the second, four in the fifth.
Nolan Daniel worked two scoreless of relief, giving Purdue much-needed zeros in the sixth and seventh innings.
Joshua South (5-2) responded with an excellent outing for the Bruins after he was moved from Friday to Saturday in the rotation. The righthander worked seven innings of four-hit ball even while striking out only three batters.
Cam Thompson connected for an opposite-field double in the sixth inning to extend his on-base streak to 34 consecutive games. CJ Valdez was back in the lineup after sitting out Friday, drawing a leadoff walk in the fourth inning to give him a 30-game on-base streak.
