WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue men's tennis team dropped its Big Ten home opener Friday afternoon at the Schwartz Tennis Center 4-1 to Penn State.
Gabrielle Brancatelli provided Purdue's lone point of the match with a dominant 6-2, 6-4 win over Malik Bhatnagar at No. 2, after moving up a spot in the lineup ahead of singles. The win was the first of the freshman's career in the Big Ten.
Rohan Sachdev saw his back-and-forth tilt against Bora Sengul come within one point shy of finishing in a third set tiebreaker at No. 3. Going to two set tiebreakers and captivating the crowd at the Schwartz Tennis Center, Sachdev's match finished 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-6 (6-4).
The other unfinished singles match came at No. 5 with Piotr Galus. The Polish international outlasted Sam Bossem in the first set and held a lead in the third when the match finished 7-5, 3-6, 3-2.
The Boilermakers will be back in action Sunday afternoon against No. 2 Ohio State at the Schwartz Tennis Center at noon.
