EVANSTON, Ill. – Unable to overcome a three-run first inning, the Purdue softball team (19-22, 2-7 Big Ten) fell at No. 6 Northwestern, 2-14 in five innings.
The Boilermakers totaled five hits in the game, including three in the top of the fifth. Facing one of the top pitchers in the Big Ten and No. 26 in the nation, Purdue was held to one walk. Freshman left fielder Kyndall Bailey and pinch runner Emilee Cox recorded runs.
Purdue put up a fight in the top of the fifth, adding two runs on sac flies and loading the bases when the third out was earned.
Righty Alex Echazarreta received the loss, moving to 9-6 on the season after allowing eight runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of work. Meanwhile, relief pitcher Mo Wimpee tossed 2.1 inninings, holding the Wildcats to one run per inning and recording a pair of strikeouts.
