WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 31 Purdue men's golf team surged late in the second round and sit in second place after a blustery day one at the Boilermaker Invitational.
The Boilermakers totaled a 36-hole tally of 6-under par 562 (284-278) to fall one shot off the pace set by No. 21 Illinois (284-277=561). Rutgers is a distant third at 7-over par 575.
Purdue and Illinois waged a back-and-forth battle on the first day and were tied after 18 holes at even-par 284 and then just one shot separating the two teams after 36 holes. Illinois led by as many as eight shots late in the second round, but the Boilermakers played holes 16 through 18 in a combined 6-under par to cut the deficit to one shot entering Sunday's final round.
The Boilermakers were fueled in round one – a round that was played in a cold, north wind and temps in the low 40s – by Cole Bradley. Bradley recorded a superb round of 7-under par 64 that featured eight birdies and one bogey. He birdied both 11 and 18, the lone birdies on those holes during the first round. He would finish the day in second overall at 5-under par 137 (64-73).
Herman Sekne turned in a strong second round to move into a fourth-place tie at 2-under par 140 (73-67). Sekne recorded seven birdies in his second round and leads the field in birdies with 11.
Andrew Farraye also had a strong second round, jumping 40 spots from his round one tally, and currently sits tied for 15th at 2-over par 144 (78-66). Farraye, who started on hole 2, birdies Nos. 16, 17 and 18 to surge into the top 20.
Joe Weiler is tied for 19th at 3-over par 145 (73-72), while Luke Prall is tied for 31st at 6-over par 148 (74-74).
Playing as individuals, Peyton Snoeberger is ninth at even-par 142 (72-70), Nick Dentino is tied for 15th at 2-over par 142 (73-71) and Kent Hsaio and Nels Surtani are tied for 34th at 7-over par 149.
Purdue will tee off the final round at 11:08 a.m. ET, off hole No. 1 at Ackerman-Allen Golf Course. The Boilermakers will be paired with Illinois and Rutgers. Admission is free to all home golf meets.
- Cole Bradley's 64 in the first round was the third-best score in Boilermaker Invitational history and the third-best 18-hole score in school history. Bradley is one of three players in school history with three career rounds of 65 or better (Adam Schenk, Brian Carlson).
- Andrew Farraye's 66 in the second round is tied for the 8th-best round in Boilermaker Invitational history.
- Purdue's team score of 278 in the second round is tied for the ninth-best round in Boilermaker Invitational history.
- Herman Sekne recorded a second-round 67, his ninth round this season in the 60s – tied for the third most in a season in school history.
