BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Purdue softball team (8-12) suffered a 1-2 loss vs. SIUE followed by a 1-6 decision vs. Illinois St. Leading the Boilermaker effort was pitcher/first baseman Alex Echazarreta, who recorded 12 strikeouts over the two games (8.1 innings of work).
Purdue's runs were scored by Rylee Platusic (run vs. SIUE) and Alex Echazarreta (vs. Illinois St.).
In Game One of the day vs. SIUE, Echazarreta tallied seven strikeouts in just 4.1 innings of work. The senior allowed just two walks and four hits before Alexa Pinarski (0-5) entered in relief.
Purdue was the first to score, earning its lone run of the game in the fourth inning on Echazarreta's RBI double which scored Rylee Platusic from third. However, the lead was short-lived as SIUE responded in the fifth with one of its own to even the score before the game-winner came in the top of the seventh.
Overall, Purdue out-hit SIUE 8-6 and went errorless in both games.
In Game Two vs. Illinois St., the Red Birds came out swinging in the first inning, notching two runs, a lead the Boilermakers could not recover from. Purdue was able to score one in the top of the second, thanks to freshman Ryen Ross's single for Echazarreta to score.
Ross's RBI marked the third of the weekend, after hitting a 2 RBI homer in the opening game at FAU.
Starter Brenna Smith (1-4) was credited the loss following two runs on three hits. Meanwhile, Echazarreta, who came in relief during the second inning, struck out five batters in her 4.0 innings of work.
Purdue will be back tomorrow to close out the FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament when the Boilermakers face SIUE for one final showdown beginning at 10 a.m. ET.
