WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.— Despite a grand slam by Alex Echazarreta in the third inning, Purdue softball (18-16, 1-1 Big Ten) split the weekend vs. Illinois (14-12, 1-1 Big Ten) following a 9-4 decision in the second game of the series.
With a cold front moving through the area, weather delayed the start of the game by an hour and led to a 30-minute halt following the third inning before play resumed.
Illinois got out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the second and added a trio of runs in the third for the game-winner.
Echazarreta led the team with four RBI, thanks to the grand slam, which also marked the second consecutive game the senior had a shot go beyond the fence. Meanwhile, Rachel Becker, Rylee Platusic and Kiara Dillon all scored on the dinger.
In addition to the homer, Purdue recorded two doubles, marking the ninth straight game the Boilermakers have recorded at least one.
Purdue was out-hit 13-6 in the game and recorded two errors to Illinois' one.
The third and final game of the series was canceled due to cold temperatures.
The Boilermakers will be on the road next weekend in State College, Pennsylvania, set for a three-game series at Penn State beginning next Friday at 6 p.m. ET on B1G+.
