WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Heavy winds, rain delays and a chilly evening did not stop the Purdue softball team (12-13) from remaining undefeated at The Spring Games. First, the Boilermakers took down Western Michigan, 6-2, before downing Niagara, 3-1.
Runs were spread across the roster, with eight total Boilermakers recording a run on the day, with Rachel Becker leading the effort with two runs (one per game).
Alex Echazarreta (5-1) tallied four straight strikeouts to start the game vs. Western Michigan on her way to eight total over her 4.2 innings of work. Meanwhile, Brenna Smith (2-4) earned the victory vs. Niagara, while Alexa Pinarski secured her first save of the season, which included strikeouts on the final two batters faced.
Newcomers put on a triple clinic vs. Western Michigan, with second baseman Jade Moy, third baseman Olivia McFadden and first baseman Tyrina Jones each recording a triple in the victory.
Meanwhile, right fielder Rylee Platusic had a stellar performance defensively, seeing four putouts and an assist, which included a diving catch and throw all the way to catcher Kaeley Hallada for outs two and three to get the Boilermakers out of a jam in the sixth inning vs. WMU.
The Spring Games come to a close tomorrow morning in a doubleheader. Purdue will be back in R.O.C. Park for a 9 a.m. ET showdown vs. Bucknell before taking on Siena at 11:30 a.m. ET.
